The streaking Philadelphia Flyers are playing above their heads.

Despite having three of their best players sidelined by injuries all season — Sean Couturier, Cam Atkinson, and Ryan Ellis — they have won seven of their last eight games. They have climbed to  .500, and moved to within six points of a playoff spot.

Give credit to new coach John Tortorella, and his players for rebounding from a 10-game losing streak in November.

But even if the Flyers somehow stay in the playoff race, they are not legitimate Stanley Cup contenders and should be selling at the March 3 trade deadline. Right?

The Boston Bruins, who host the Flyers on Monday afternoon at 1, are legitimate contenders. In fact, the Bruins are the Cup favorites. GM Don Sweeney, however, is not resting on his team’s 33-5-4 record. He is exploring the trade market and could add a marquee player to his talented mix.

Meanwhile, the Pittsburgh Penguins and Minnesota Wild are exploding a trade, per Pittsburgh Hockey Now’s Dan Kingerski.. Both teams have substantial cap space. And needs.
