Boston College freshman center Cutter Gauthier, the Philadelphia Flyers’ top prospect, was a unanimous selection Wednesday to Hockey East’s all-rookie team.

It comes as no surprise. Gauthier leads his entire team in goals (16), power-play goals (7), points (34), and points per game (1.13).

Drafted by the Flyers in the first round (No. 5 overall) last year, Gauthier will soon decide whether to sign with the NHL team or return to BC next season.

Boston College is 14-15-6 overall. The eighth-seeded Eagles defeated No. 9 Massachusetts on Wednesday night, 5-2, in the first round of the Hockey East Tournament.  Gauthier collected three assists.

BC went 4-0 against UMass this season.

In February, the 6-foot-2, 193-pound Gauthier was named the league’s rookie of the month as he had 10 points (three goals, seven assists) and 33 shots on goal in eight games. He was also the rookie of the month in November.

Kinship with Hayes

Gauthier, 19, has already built a friendship with Kevin Hayes, a veteran Philadelphia Flyers forward who once starred at BC.

At the beginning of the season, Gauthier told SB Nation, Hayes “reached out to me and we actually met up and went golfing. Such a great guy. Definitely a role model of mine, someone to look up to moving forward. He’s been awesome since Day 1. Always reaching out, giving me calls and checking up.”

He said Hayes has been a “really great spirit. I’m super fortunate to have him in my contacts. Somebody I can call whenever.”

Provided Hayes is still with the Philadelphia Flyers next year, Gauthier could center an all-Boston College line that includes Hayes and Cam Atkinson.

Breakaways

Gauthier has a career-high six-game points streak. He has at least one point in 10 of his last 11 games. … In its history, Boston College is 10-1 vs. Massachusetts in Hockey East Tournament matchups. … Gauthier finished the regular season ranked third in the league with 0.53 goals per game.
