Philadelphia Flyers
What If the Flyers Never Traded Cutter Gauthier?
From the time he was drafted up until the minute he was traded, Cutter Gauthier was expected to help guide the Philadelphia Flyers through a grueling rebuild, which began essentially from scratch after a number of top draft picks failed to break out or establish themselves.
As we now know, those days never came, and Gauthier’s previous responsibilities have since been placed on the shoulders of the Flyers’ lone 2024 first-round pick, 17-year-old center Jett Luchanko.
To this day, it’s still unclear what exactly happened that caused Gauthier to spurn the Flyers for months in an effort to force his way out of Philadelphia. But what would the Flyers’ future outlook be had Gauthier remained in the organization and squarely a key piece of its long-term plans?
For starters, the Flyers would be without Jamie Drysdale on the right side of their defense, as well as the 2025 second-round pick that was acquired from the Anaheim Ducks alongside him. Not that Drysdale is guaranteed to become the star in the NHL that he was touted to be when he was picked in 2020, but his absence would leave the Flyers with a gaping hole on the right side of the defense, if for no reason other than the wide gulf of talent between Drysdale and his peers.
One could argue that if Gauthier was never traded, the Flyers could have opted to select a defenseman in the 2024 draft rather than a center like Luchanko. Danny Briere and Co. had the perfect opportunity to make that a reality in the real world, but they collectively decided to pass on University of Denver star Zeev Buium in favor of Luchanko.
Buium, of course, was drafted one spot later, getting snapped up by the Minnesota Wild with the 14th overall pick.
So far, the Flyers would hypothetically have a core of Gauthier, Matvei Michkov, and Buium.
Speaking of Michkov, let’s go back to the 2023 NHL Draft, when the Flyers already knew they had an issue with Gauthier and attempted to send him to the Montreal Canadiens to acquire the No. 5 overall pick.
That trade obviously never came to be, so I’m not going to play pretend and make it so.
However, the rift between Gauthier and the Flyers might explain why the team opted for a talented young defenseman, Oliver Bonk, rather than a burgeoning winger in Gabe Perreault, one of Gauthier’s Boston College teammates and close friends.
Perreault, 19, was drafted one spot after Bonk in the 2023 draft, going 23rd overall to the New York Rangers. In his first season in the NCAA, Perreault racked up 19 goals, 41 assists, and 60 points in just 36 games played.
The 5-foot-11 winger’s 60 points tied him for fourth in the NCAA in total scoring this past season, with only Macklin Celebrini and BC teammates Gauthier and Will Smith ahead of him. Perreault sounds like the kind of offensive talent the Flyers need, doesn’t he?
For further hypotheticals, let’s assume that Buium and Perreault both turn pro at the end of the upcoming NCAA season. How would the Flyers line up then?
Forwards
Cutter Gauthier – Sean Couturier – Matvei Michkov
Owen Tippett – Morgan Frost – Travis Konecny
Gabe Perreault (AHL?) – Noah Cates – Tyson Foerster
Joel Farabee – Scott Laughton/Ryan Poehling – Garnet Hathaway
Extras: Nicolas Deslauriers
Defense
Cam York – Travis Sanheim
Zeev Buium – Rasmus Ristolainen
Nick Seeler – Egor Zamula
Extras: Ronnie Attard, Erik Johnson
Ideally, Perreault isn’t playing as a third-line forward with Joel Farabee getting moved down to the fourth line. There would obviously be some work to do there, without proposing that specific players get traded in order to build a more proportionate team with balance and variation.
The defense, even sans Drysdale, looks equally as talented on paper as it does in real life currently, though I suppose it’s concerning that Ristolainen, coming off an injury, would be the only regular right-shot in the lineup. The Flyers could always address that in a later draft, though.
Speaking of later drafts, it’s also worth noting that Gauthier’s agent, Kurt Overhardt, represents a lot of good players. He also represents Ryan Johansen, who doesn’t seem like he’s going to step foot in a hockey rink as a member of the Flyers organization.
Although Briere primarily offered size as the reason the Flyers passed on Buium in the 2024 draft, the 18-year-old defenseman is also represented by Overhardt. If a problem with the agent is having ripple effects due to whatever happened with Gauthier, it’s something the team is going to need to address, and quickly, because it appears to be actively impeding the front office from putting together the best possible rendition of the Philadelphia Flyers.
Overhardt’s time as an agent precedes Briere’s time as general manager, and he’ll be around long after Briere is gone, too.
What’s in the past is in the past, and now it’s up to the Flyers to prove that they have been making the right decisions.
I feel any player who refuses to play for the team who drafted them should be barred from playing for 3 years. Same amount of time as a ELC. They should honor the contract then in three years they will have the freedom to choose any team they like. Who knows during that time they may change their minds and decide to stay. Playing in the NHL is a privilege and an honor not to be disrespected like these brats are doing. The NHL needs to put their foot down and put an end to this or it’s only going to get worse. The three year bar would be a perfect way to stop it.
In a way it is already set up like. If NCAA players do not want to sign with the team that drafts them they can wait until they graduate and then are free to sign with any team they please, but they still need to sign an ELC at that point. Kevin Hayes, Adam Fox, and Jimmy Vesey are a few recent examples that comes to mind… oddly enough they all ended up signing with the Rangers.
The odd thing is that you do not see these issues with any CHL players. Especially considering the fact that NHL teams only hold a CHL players rights for two years unlike four years for NCAA players. I don’t think any NCAA hockey programs can afford it, but I’m curious to see how NIL affects this in the future.
Bothers me because he changed his mind after being draft. So he wasted all of our time
I still am unclear if he’s playing power wing or center in nhl
one of the guys he models his game after is Pierre luc Dubois . So it’s possibly a Tortorella thing . I say good riddance if is luc Dubois thing because Drew doughty and rest of kings team were complaining about luc Dubois all year this year
we need an elite #1 defenseman To win a cup . If cam york couldn’t do it I’m happy to have drysdale . They had nhl tape on drysdale pre trade . I think he can do it
we just need to get a top power wing on other side for michkov and a center in front of couturier and we are on our way in two years . We have lots of the guts of a cup team in place . I’ve already forgotten about Gauthier . Good riddance . Welcome Jamie Drysdale . The offensive skill is there
We got Jamie drysdale . A #1 defenseman . Top pair Offense . We need that to win a cup . Much more important than a power wing being elite at this level.
so we have drysdale for top pair , sanheim a proto type 2nd pair for this league , 2 way guy , and york for 3rd pair offense . I think our defense is pretty perfect . Compares to rangers and Vegas last few years if drysdale can be fox and pietrangelo .
im excited for Jamie drysdale . I still don’t know if Gauthier is playing power wing or center as a nhler and at this point I don’t care
Briere needs to get us a top line power wing and a top line center next 2 years with luchanko for our 3rd line in 3-4 years for our cup team . I don’t know how he gets this accomplished but I can feel it’s coming next summer
it’s better Gauthier is gone if he’s modeling his game after Pierre luc Dubois . Briere has this . We can do it .
Quitter’s a bum, f*ck’m
Drysdale a #1 defenseman, really says who? On the flyers, kraken or some other slop organization. Drysdale’s pedigree so far is in line with a Ryan Ellis. An undersized right shot d-man with an ever growing injury history. Personally I don’t think he’s as talented as Ellis. If these injuries continue at this current pace, I can see Drysdale on LTIR, just like Ellis! Was a bad deal in terms of talent. The Ducks got the better talent in this deal. Making deals like this keep the flyers as a non- playoff team.
Agent, Kurt Overhardt..represents approx 36 NHL players…..KO Sports Inc. out of Denver……other than Johansen also reps current Flyer Joel Farabee….really no super stars, like in the mold of Scott Boras….many 3rd and 4th line and 3rd pairing d-men. Also rep Sean Walker..perhaps Joel Farabee will be on the move now. Danny and Jonesy need to have the league investigate the Johansen trade. It really is a slick and sly maneuver on the part of KO and the player. I would think unethical.
Can’t wait until he visits the Wells Fargo Center. It’ll be a JD Drew kind of reception! Alas, since I live in Florida (but a diehard Flyers fan since I grew up in Eastern PA), I won’t be there to see it, but will gladly experience it on ESPN+. I hope he doesn’t cry when he gets boo’d!
Drysdale hasn’t shown yet that he’s a top-pair defenseman. In fact, he hasn’t shown yet that he’s not injury-prone and can play a full season. Maybe he was the best they could get for the arrogant quitter, but essentially losing that top pick will hurt.
Don’t tell me they are expecting Luchanko to take over the rebuild expectations. Luchanko will be a third-line NHLer if he makes it, so they passed on a potential 1D in Buium to take a potential 3C. Perfect example of why they are where they are.
Thanks for reminding me they passed on Perreault to take Boink or Bonk or whatever. Watch him score 40 goals for NYR someday.
Once again, did you not read the article? Buium’s agent is the same as Cutter’s. They were not drafting him. Buium was the safe pick, similar to when Hextall picked Patrick. The scouts urged Hextall to pick Heiskanen, similar to the scouts urged DB to choose Luchenko. DB listened to his scouts, unlike Hextall.
Perrault was passed on because he would have been a repeat of Gauthier. Take the blinders off and get educated as to what really happened. Don’t just look at the surface. You need to dig a bit to find out why things happened the way they did
Once again? I’m actually a well-informed (and courteous) commenter. Hextall was urged to take Makar, but that’s irrelevant. Your point is that because DB listened to the scouts, the pick will work out. Maybe, but not necessarily. There’s a long list of Flyers’ picks that were busts, recommended by scouts. Luchanko (check your spelling) is the type of player whose projection is bottom six. Could he surprise? Possibly. But there were better possibilities passed over, which has been the Flyers’ problem. You’re saying Perreault (check your spelling again) was passed over out of fear because he is a friend of Cutter and it would have been the same problem. You don’t know that, and passing up good players out of fear of their agents or who they’re friends with is just not a good approach.
This rebuild is already in really deep sh.. And it’s no surprise this thing is looking to fail before they even get their feet off the ground. Keep signing the the next group of overrated players to albatross contracts in hope of selling a few more tickets in the short term. Ridiculous mistakes made time and again.
