Matvei Michkov has one goal for his NHL career with the Philadelphia Flyers, and it remains the same from start to finish: winning.

Winning the Stanley Cup, winning preseason games, winning regular season games. Winning, winning, winning. It’s not about Michkov–he doesn’t want this to be about him. It’s about achieving the ultimate prize as one member of a larger group.

“It hasn’t settled yet. It doesn’t feel real; feels like a dream,” Michkov said via his translator, Flyers consultant Slava Kuznetsov, at his introductory press conference on Wednesday morning. “I think my father would be really proud. I want to help the team win, help the team win the Stanley Cup and all cups possible.”

Michkov’s father, Andrey Michkov, was found deceased near a pond in Sochi on April 4, 2023–a little more than a year ago. It was Andrey’s dream to watch his son play in the NHL, and it was Matvei’s dream to make it happen. Suffice to say, Wednesday was a bittersweet moment for Michkov and his family.

Andrey and Matvei shared the same vision, but how does Matvei plan to translate that to the NHL now that he’s here? The transcendent Russian talent likes to keep things simple. Score goals and put the team first.

“Bring young blood to the team, put goals on the scoreboard,” Michkov said, via Kuznetsov. “Help the team win night after night so the fans can come and enjoy the games more and more and help the team win the whole thing.

“The first plan is for the team to make the playoffs. My personal plans, I’ll keep to myself. I have them, but I’ll keep to myself. I want to go all the way.”

Acclimating Michkov to life in North America and helping him tackle the language barrier and culture shock will be the Flyers‘ biggest challenge.

Future teammates Egor Zamula and Ivan Fedotov have already been in contact with Michkov, and the 2023 No. 7 overall pick is grateful in general for the warm welcome he’s received from his new team, the Flyers.

The Flyers also plan to expedite this process further; Flyers general manager Danny Briere also shared Wednesday that it was the organization’s plan to bring the 19-year-old’s mother, Marya, and younger brother, Prohor, to the United States to help accommodate Matvei further.

The gesture from the organization to bring Marya and Prohor over will not only help make Michkov’s transition easier, but will allow for him and his family to continue to heal from their tragic loss together.

“As far as we know, eventually, in a month, month and a half, that’s the plan,” Briere said. “Plans can always go sideways, but that’s the plan, eventually. So, it’d be good to have his mom and little brother with him.”

I’d like to Welcome the Michkov family into The Flyers fans family. They’ve been through alot and are coming from a country who play by different rules. I hope when the rest of the family gets here they decide to call this place home. And we should do everything to encourage that. Mat’s comments at the press conference told me he was a confident and respectful young man. They are great qualities to have as a player and a man.

With that said here is my sports point of view. “WE GOT A “F”IN SNIPER MAN!!!!!”
GO FLYERS!!!
