Flyers Miss Out On Offer Sheet Candidates; Blues Make Ambitious Move
The St. Louis Blues announced Tuesday morning that they had signed Edmonton Oilers defenseman Philip Broberg and forward Dylan Holloway to offer sheets, meaning that the Philadelphia Flyers are now down two potential options to both bolster their roster and add young talent.
Early reports indicate that Broberg received a two-year deal with a $4,580,917 AAV, while Holloway signed for two years at a $2,290,457 AAV. This is important, as a single dollar more on each player’s AAV would have required St. Louis to pay additional compensation.
In a corresponding transaction, the Pittsburgh Penguins acquired a 2025 third-round pick and a 2026 second-round pick from the Blues in exchange for a 2025 second-round pick and a 2026 fifth-round pick. This gives St. Louis the compensation necessary to complete the offer sheets should Edmonton choose not to match within the allotted seven-day period.
The Flyers and Oilers had long been strong prospective trade partners, especially considering Edmonton’s perpetuated need to add depth and talent defensively. The Oilers were reportedly interested in trading for former Flyers defenseman Sean Walker, who ended up being dealt to the Colorado Avalanche at the NHL trade deadline before signing with the Carolina Hurricanes in free agency last month.
Further to this point, Broberg is only 23 years old, while Holloway is only 22. Both players are at stages in their careers where they would benefit more from increased ice time, and after making a run to the Stanley Cup Final, Edmonton was not necessarily in a position to afford them that with the high stakes.
The Oilers did, however, acquire top Buffalo Sabres prospect Matthew Savoie as part of a major offseason retool.
There is still a number of restricted free agents still available, including another potential Flyers option in center Cole Sillinger, currently of the Columbus Blue Jackets.
While there is, of course, no guarantees for the Flyers here on out, the Blues’ move on the Oilers shows that not all NHL teams intend on remaining dormant through the doldrums of the offseason.
How were the Flyers going to fit Broberg under the cap?
As I have mentioned ad nauseum……Danny B. needs to move Risto and his $5M cap hit….Flames, and Leafs were two teams earlier interested in him…..Flyers could eat a percentage of the remaining contract to get at least a 2nd round pick. Further, Risto is now on this team, as it is currently set up , slated as a third pairing defenseman with Zamula…..but he is not worth the value of a $5M cap hit as a third pairing d-man. And if the Flyers could eat 50% of Risto’s remaining contract….they would still garner $2.5M in added cap space.
Risto needs to be a 2nd pair defensive d man . If he’s a 3rd he does get paid too much . Seelers upside is NOT 2nd pair for a cup defensively . Risto is getting paid to be Pronger . Risto is getting paid to be Eric Johnson , ryan McDonough, Brayden mcnabb , Colton parayko on a cup team . An above standout defensive defender who can move the biggest power wings and can defend the top snipers .
I don’t want risto if he’s not our elite defender . Which means we would still need that
Bromberg is a sanheim Clone . He’s does no good for us . We need an elite defensive defender to replace risto if he goes . For a cup sanheim and Bromberg 2nd pair won’t work . The whole point if your going for a cup in 3 years is to have the pairings correct .
we don’t need another offensive defenseman. If risto or Seeler leave it’s needs to be a defensive guy to replace
we haven’t had many in flyers history . Mccrimmon in 80s , Richardson in 90s and pronger in 2010s . We haven’t had one since pronger until risto showed up
if risto goes then I still need the postion . So what’s parayko salary ? Parayko and risto are the same guy in the same postion defensive 2nd pair
They would’ve never made an offer at that price point. Blues are crazy for that but they’re making it at the price intentionally, so that Edmonton wouldn’t dare match.
We have no use for Broberg
we already have that position . Travis Sanheim
the other two players on each pair offensive are drysdale at the #1 and cam york at the 3rd pair for a cup
when your ready to go for a cup notice each team that’s been a contender has a standout offensive guy and a standout defensive guy on each pair for all 3 pairs . Sometimes u may see two defensive pairs on 3rd pair but I haven’t seen it recently
flyers fans don’t know what defensive defenseman are supposed to look like . We have only had a few standouts last 40 years
mccrimmon in the 80s once he left in 1987 we collapsed
we had Luke Richardson in 1990s during lindros era and the team was incomplete on many front until lindros left
the 2010 run was pronger .
we don’t want broberg unless york is traded
york and sanheim won’t be paired together once it’s geaux time . They are both two way guys
We have zero use for broberg unless cam york is moved
notice edmonton has nurse a standout defender with an offensive guy on each pair now . They also have that big 6 foot 8 dude who is also defensive . They also have Ceci who is a defensive first defenseman
if your going to make a run in playoffs you have a two way guy paired with a stay at home guy . Look at rangers , vegas , Florida , Edmonton this year
the public seems to not the difference between an offensive defensman and a defensive defenseman and if u look back to all the cups each winner has one of each on each pair
there are like 12 guys in entire league I would call optical backstops that can be the lead defensive defenseman on a cup team. That means 20 teams don’t have one at all times . Ditto for #1 defenseman
edmonton has nurse , rangers have trouba , Florida has ekblad , Vegas has mcnabb , Colorado had Johnson , tampa Mcdonough , right now Colorado has no elite defender . Colorado needs A Johnson replacement or no cup again
I have no idea what St. Louis is doing . They dumped all their cup guys . And are in no mans land .
I think Holloway is a power wing . We could use him over broberg for sure for our 3rd line for our cup.
flyers have had no elite defensive defenseman except niskanen and until Ristoleinen showed up . If risto can’t be a mcnabb or ekblad he has to go but I think he will work and Tortorella love him . You just won’t see max playoff risto until playoffs with the hitting . Remember you didn’t see playoff pronger until playoffs with the hitting . Ditto for Scott stevens to chara
in flahr and brieres office it has as a blueprint for our cup in 3 and 4 years as the projection
drysdale – bonk 1st pair
sanheim – ristoleinen 2nd pair
york- Seeler 3rd pair
one offense 2 way guy and one defensive guy
if ginning can uproot risto or Seeler
or zamula can uproot york that’s fine
but there’s no room for broberg unless sanheim or york get traded
broberg is not a #1 defensman nor is he a optical backstop .
I like sanheim anyway . I’d rather have sanheim than broberg in 3 years .
