In Wednesday’s edition of Bailey’s Daily, we’ll be talking the latest Philadelphia Flyers news, NHL news, stories, highlights, and more from the last day.

Flyers News

The Philadelphia Flyers never fail at finding ways to put themselves in NHL news headlines; Tuesday’s reason was that the Flyers, beginning what will be a long, messy, and drawn out process, placed injured forward Ryan Johansen on unconditional waivers for the purpose of contract termination, citing a material breach.

What is a material breach, you might ask? Well, we don’t know either.

My educated guess is that Johansen’s conduct related to his injury violates the language of his contract, and the Flyers reviewed the contract and found grounds to pursue termination.

Unsurprisingly, Johansen’s agent, Kurt Overhardt, released a statement condemning the Flyers’ actions, etc., etc. Yes, it is Overhardt’s job to represent and fight for Johansen anyway, even though it seems they hardly have a case, much like a lawyer who shows up to court for a defendant they know has no chance of winning the case.

Oh, and this is the same Kurt Overhardt who represents former Flyers prospect Cutter Gauthier, Minnesota Wild prospect Zeev Buium, and other notable NHL players. It’s probably safe to speculate that this has played a part in the Johansen debacle, too.

NHL News

In other NHL news that wouldn’t keep your eyes and ears glued to the TV screen if it was televised, the Seattle Kraken tied down former No. 2 overall pick Matty Beniers to a seven-year, $49,999,999 million contract. Yes, that’s the real number and no, I did not make it up.

For those who aren’t adept at math (like myself), Beniers’s AAV comes out to $7,142,857. I’d hate to be the guy in the front office having to add that to all the other AAVs trying to keep track.

Beniers was one player I thought was worth an offer sheet from the Flyers, even at a high price like the one mentioned above. Worse things have happened!

There is no code,” St. Louis Blues GM Doug Armstrong, 2024.

Kraken…one dollar short of $50M….what is that all about! Is there something in the league by-laws or players association agreement about a contract worth $50M or more?

Danny Deuber

If I was Beniers I would have given the Kracken a dollar to make it 50 million. That’s some lame stuff right there. Would that dollar have put them over the salary cap. LOL

LOL…not really…though they are not in a great position right now.
PROJECTED CAP SPACE…….$4,286

Tough to get a true 1c. Beniers looked legit then maybe took step back ? Not sure . Seattle took step back but I have no idea what caused it . Season before they signed all those 2nd line snipers as depth pieces .

I would take my chances with beniers . I have to see more . Edmonton , vancouver and Vegas were 3 really good teams in that division . I thought Vancouver was a fraud going into playoffs but I was wrong . I like both Edmonton’s and Vancouver’s size on defense . And they both have legit #1 defenseman . Quinn Hughes was amazing so was bouchard in playoffs and size behind them was amazing
