Bailey’s Daily: Flyers Roster; Penguins Trade Shocks Hockey Community

In Friday’s edition of Bailey’s Daily, we’ll be talking the latest Philadelphia Flyers news, NHL news, stories, highlights, and more from the last day.
Flyers News
The Philadelphia Flyers have apparently dropped their big ol’ roster for training camp and the upcoming NHL preseason, which starts in *checks notes* four weeks!
On this rendition of the Flyers training camp roster, I broke down each position by number and analyzed what this year’s training camp is going to mean for specific players. To nobody’s surprise, the Flyers are absolutely loaded at right wing and defense, but less so everywhere else.
Oh, and speaking of surprises, you might want to see the goalies.
I’d also like to take a moment to send my best wishes to Travis Konecny and his family, as their Haddonfield, New Jersey, residence apparently caught fire and suffered some pretty heavy damage on Wednesday night.
Reports say the home isn’t in great shape after all three floors were affected, but the most important thing is that Konecny, his wife, and his two kids are safe and unharmed.
NHL News
The hockey community was in for a big surprise on Thursday afternoon when the Winnipeg Jets traded top prospect Rutger McGroarty to the Pittsburgh Penguins in a one-for-one trade that yielded former first-round pick Brayden Yager.
This isn’t the first time a Penguins trade has caught folks by surprise, and it feels more fun on the surface after coming together in the days following the Patrik Laine trade.
For those out of the loop, McGroarty requested a trade out of Winnipeg to try and strong-arm his way onto an NHL roster because… well, he felt like it. General manager Kevin Cheveldayoff didn’t have a clear answer when asked about the ordeal, but I suppose they’re more worried about developing Yager now instead.
As for McGroarty, he’s likely playing in a top-six role on an aging Penguins team that still features NHL legends Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. Despite that, anyone suggesting he’s seriously in the running for the Calder Trophy has probably lost their marbles.
Time will tell; let’s see it on the ice!
Looks like the Flyers are not alone in teams that have to deal with disgruntled prospects. Jets probably did as well as can be expected in the return with Yager…..he will be a NHL top six guy in a few years.
Good take on the situation, Romus. McG might have slightly higher potential, but kudos to Chevy for getting a good prospect back.
And yes…there is also now the Preds’ top goalie prospect Yar Askarov who wants to be traded. It is becoming contagious. Once some of the young prospects see how it is working and they getting what they want, more may start to do this….demanding where they want to play.
I strongly disagree. I don’t think there is anything wrong with a younger player saying “nope, I’m done with your team and taking my talents elsewhere”. The player isn’t breaking their contract and is standing up for themselves….welcome to the new world of not being walked all over
Walked all over, with money involved, walked all over?? You’re kidding me right???!!!
Another disgruntled prima donna out of USA Hockey?! What is with these kids who win a few medals as underage/junior/college player thinking that’s enough to immediately “go pro”? Used to be, making demands & acting like you’re better than all your peers would put a target on your back. I guess we’ll see. I am curious though…does McGroarty know that Sullivan is a product of coaching under Tortarella?
Good point that a lot of this is coming out of USA Hockey. I would be wary of drafting from that program. I’m glad the Flyers stayed away from there in this year’s draft.
Penguins era has been over for 5 years
their fans can watch Crosby , malkin , and letang skate out their golden years
looks like mcgroarty just went to a dead situation next 10 years
He signed an ELC not 10 years, how do you figure?
This country is all a bunch of crybabies just whine and stomp your foot until you get your way , sports are going downhill fast
Clint Eastwood called us all pussies about 20-25 years ago.
He’s right again
