In Saturday’s edition of Bailey’s Daily, we’ll be talking the latest Philadelphia Flyers news, NHL news, stories, highlights, and more from the last day.
Flyers News
We have less than three weeks remaining before the Philadelphia Flyers rookies (prospects, some would say) take the ice for the annual rookie camp on Sept. 12. Exciting times, right?
Russian sensation Matvei Michkov is expected to make his Flyers debut one day after, on Sept. 13, against the New York Rangers in the Flyers’ rookie series. Then, just under a week later, on Sept. 19, the real thing begins.
Then it’s the NHL preseason and training camp for all Flyers players.
Speaking of training camp, if you missed the Flyers roster that has apparently been revealed on the NHL Media site, you might want to check out our breakdown!
NHL News
Keanu Reeves (yes, the Hollywood superstar and world-famous actor best known for his starring roles in the 1999 film “The Matrix” and the “John Wick” franchise) signed a one-day contract with the OHL Windsor Spitfires.
Why, you might ask? Reeves signed a bunch of Spitfires items, including jerseys, to be auctioned off for the benefit of the Canadian Mental Health Association of Windsor-Essex.
Another easter egg to this story: Reeves was a goalie in his youth and tried out for the Spitfires as a kid, but had to hang up the skates prematurely due to injury. I think things worked out pretty well for the 59-year-old movie star and musician.
In other NHL news pertaining to players still actively playing, the San Jose Sharks were the ones to pull off a massive Yaroslav Askarov trade with the Nashville Predators.
Generally speaking, the return for Nashville was considered underwhelming, but it was a further reminder that a.) goalies usually aren’t worth that much on the trade market, and b.) goalie prospects aren’t sure things to actually become good NHL goalies.
As for the Sharks, San Jose Hockey Now‘s Sheng Peng LOVES the Askarov trade, and in more ways than one!
Preds do get a first round pick in 2025 in the deal …will have three first round picks, along with the Flyers in next June’s draft. Flyers could have made a move with Kolosov to the Sharks. Danny B needs to be able to accurately and quickly read the GM ‘tea leaves’ around the NHL.
