Bailey’s Daily: Flyers Goalies; Stunning Swayman Contract Demands
In Tuesday’s edition of Bailey’s Daily, we’ll be talking the latest Philadelphia Flyers news, NHL news, stories, highlights, and more from the last day.
Flyers News
Much has been made of the Philadelphia Flyers’ goalie situation heading into the 2024-25 season, as incumbent starter Sam Ersson and Russian newcomer Ivan Fedotov have been tapped as the team’s NHL duo in goal for the year.
The bigger question, though, is the status of Belarusian prospect Alexei Kolosov, who evidently struggled with the language barrier during his short time in the AHL playing for the Lehigh Valley Phantoms.
With Fedotov and fellow youngsters Matvei Michkov and Egor Zamula, maybe the NHL would be a less lonely place for the 22-year-old Kolosov. After all, the Flyers do have an extra roster space available if and when Ryan Johansen’s contract is terminated, so carrying three goalies instead of two forwards or two defensemen would be a creative solution to this problem.
In the modern NHL, carrying three goalies on an NHL roster is incredibly rare, but in the Flyers’ specific circumstances, it might be worth a try, especially as one eye is always looking towards the future with this group.
NHL News
According to a report, 24-year-old Boston Bruins goalie Jeremy Swayman is looking for a $10 million AAV on his next contract, which has been highly anticipated for quite a long time now.
For those who haven’t run the numbers, the double digits club is one only Carey Price and Sergei Bobrovsky are members of, and Price’s playing days are over. In terms of true salary, only Winnipeg’s Connor Hellebuyck and Tampa Bay’s Andrei Vasilevskiy are seeing $10 million this year.
As a young goalie who is currently one of the favorites for this year’s Vezina Trophy, Swayman is worth that kind of cash, but we’ll see where things go.
Speaking of Swayman, former Boston Bruins goalie Andrew Raycroft says many in and around the Bruins organization feel Swayman has the “it” factor, and that there are no doubts about his ability to command the crease with former running mate Linus Ullmark now in Ottawa.
My answer to swayman, he’s going to be a disaster, I say proove yourself first, then let the B’s Make A Decision it’s not gonna work .
The days of brodeur and Roy singlehandedly winning a cup are over with “most “ parts of a cup team in place .
I havent really even seen a goalie singlehandedly win a playoff series . Oettinger (Dallas) almost did it a few years ago against a clearly better Calgary team in 1st round
Florida just won the cup with with all 18 guys playing defense first which we really haven’t seen since the devils of 1993-2003.
I watched colorados goalie win a cup a few years ago and he was average at best . Vegas won their cup with a 3rd or 4th stringer . Of the defensive defense is right and the team is complete and built right do we need a 10 million dollar goalie ??????
this is first notice I’m seeing that swayman is in top trench of goalies. I have my top 6 which is clear and swayman isn’t one of them . I could be wrong . Boston needs to replace krejci and Bergeron first . They need a legit power wing for Pasternak . Lucic young years were fantastic but he got too big and slow . I wouldn’t pay a goalie like that . But let Boston bury themselves .
i haven’t picked up with eye test that swayman is top 6 but I will watch from this point forward . Boston shouod do it . Marchand was their former top line sniper and he’s too old . It snowed in playoffs 2 years ago against Florida . He was a step behind
****I really haven’t seen a goalie win a playoff series LATELY
****it SHOWED in playoffs 2 years ago against Florida
Expect Bruins and Swayman to sign within the next few weeks……cannot see it going into the season…..and if he isn’t signed by December 1st he cannot play for the remainder of the season. For sure, the Bruins will not let that happen.
When I look back to the Rangers/Panthers series from last year, Shesterkin AND Bobrovsky both played great. Florida was the better team which eventually ended up giving them the series. Without Bob playing as well as he did, Shesterkin would have stolen the series for the Rangers. I guess you could say Bob won the series for Florida.
Way to much for a goalie that is not really proven yet. If he wants ten million I say trade him. I like swayman he has to prove himself first.
