Happy September, Flyers fans! In Sunday’s edition of Bailey’s Daily, we’ll be talking the latest Philadelphia Flyers news, NHL news, stories, highlights, and more from the last day.

Flyers News

Much has been made of the Philadelphia Flyers’ proverbial long-standing pursuit of a No. 1 center, but in the 2025 NHL Draft, there’s a solid chance that the organization misses out on the top positional talents once again.

After selecting three centers in the 2024 NHL Draft, that might not be a bad thing.

Figure that the 2025 draft is as strong as draft experts say and think it is, and the Flyers might be able to find a true franchise defenseman for the first time in what feels like forever.

I’m personally a big fan of OHL defenseman Matthew Schaefer, who is Canada’s captain currently, and I think Blake Fiddler has a chance to become a top-10 draft selection by the end of the year.

Fiddler has NHL bloodlines as the son of longtime NHL forward Vernon Fiddler, he’s one of the youngest players in the draft class, and he’s already 6-foot-4 and over 200 pounds. As a right-shot defenseman, Fiddler could be the steal of the draft.

NHL News

The New Jersey Devils couldn’t have really asked for a worse start to life under new head coach Sheldon Keefe.

After being involved in a sizable, awkward collision with a Hungian forward, Devils defenseman Simon Nemec crashed into the boards shoulder-first and did not finish the game for Slovakia. It’s unclear whether Nemec has a lingering injury, as doctors said after the game that Nemec does not have a dislocation or any broken bones.

That does not rule out the possibility of some sort of strain, sprain, or contusion, and Nemec’s availability for Slovakia’s next game will be determined by the New Jersey Devils and the front office.

Nemac is probably going to be the #1 defenseman . The Hughes brother there is quite good himself as well. Two high skilled offensive defenseman. Not sure what Luke Hughes upside is .
they need big defensive defenseman at some point . They just dumped bahl . So I guess the search for the next Scott stevens is still on there unless that big nasty Russian they just drafted is going to Be stevens . Once he’s ready watch out for New Jersey . It takes awhile for the defensive guys to become men defensively so it may take a bit . The offensive dmen can come in almost instantly . I’ll be angry if the big Russian guy is like stevens or chara

Nemec is one of, if not the best under 21 two-way defensemen in the league. Luke Hughes will be Dougie Hamilton’s replacement when all is said and done, and most likely will produce even more offense, he’s that skilled. His weakness is his pure defensive play, but that will improve with coaching and experience. Those two will both compete for the Norris trophy annually in a couple years. And yes, the big Russian Silayev is 6′-7″ and NASTY. Can’t wait to see him crunch people in a couple years!
