Bailey’s Daily: Flyers Trade Possibility; Avalanche Prospect Compared to NHL Star
In Monday’s edition of Bailey’s Daily, we’ll be talking the latest Philadelphia Flyers news, NHL news, stories, highlights, and more from the last day.
Flyers News
The elephant in the room heading into Philadelphia Flyers training camp is undoubtedly the amount of right wings and right-shot wings they are and will be carrying on the NHL roster in the 2024-25 season.
Presenting one creative way a Flyers trade could potentially address that issue, Toronto Maple Leafs breakout youngster Nick Robertson, the younger brother of NHL All-Star Jason Robertson, has reportedly requested a trade out of Toronto.
Robertson, 22, is currently a restricted free agent in need of a new contract, and the Maple Leafs either won’t meet his contractual demands, won’t give him the playing time he has earned over the last two seasons, or perhaps a mix of both.
This storm means that the Flyers or a similar team can swoop in and try to buy this talent on the low and profit now and in the future. There are never guarantees with young players in sports, but risks are always necessary when rebuilding a team from the bottom.
NHL News
For some NHL teams, new Colorado Avalanche prospect Ilya Nabokov was the top goaltender available in the 2024 NHL Draft. He was to the Avs, and that’s why they picked him.
The 21-year-old won the Gagarin Cup, the Alexei Cherepanov Award (top rookie), and KHL Playoffs MVP in his first season in the top Russian league last year, impressing his peers with his grasp of the mental side of the game.
So much so that former NHLer Stephane Da Costa, who stars in the KHL now, has compared Nabokov to superstar New York Islanders goaltender Ilya Sorokin.
That’s high praise for a young goaltender who is yet to play a minute at the NHL level, but the young Avalanche prospect has more than earned that comparison with his play in his home nation.
