Bailey’s Daily: Marc Staal Retires from NHL; Top Ducks Prospect Injured
In Friday’s edition of Bailey’s Daily, we’ll be talking the latest Philadelphia Flyers news, NHL news, stories, highlights, and more from the last day.
Flyers News
After 17 storied seasons in the NHL, former Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Marc Staal has hung up his skates… kind of.
The 37-year-old defenseman was hired by the New York Rangers on Thursday as a Player Development Assistant, signaling the end of his playing career, but starting a new one in a different capacity.
Staal was effectively a player-coach for the Flyers last season, mentoring young defensemen like Cam York and Egor Zamula. During his Rangers days, Staal played under Flyers head coach John Tortorella for five seasons, so he was an important liaison between the coach and the locker room and helped teach defensive zone coverages and that sort of thing.
Also, Ilya Pautov, the Flyers’ sixth-round pick from the 2024 draft in June, is having a nice start to his D+1 season. Expect him to jump up to the VHL from the MHL as his pro career starts to take shape.
NHL News
Speaking of the 2024 draft, Oshawa Generals forward Beckett Sennecke, who became the star of the show, going viral for his animated, ambivalent reaction after being selected by the Anaheim Ducks with the No. 3 pick, has already suffered a substantial injury at the start of his Ducks career.
The 18-year-old suffered a broken foot during his offseason training, the team announced on Thursday, sidelining him for upwards of six weeks.
Additionally, one of Sennecke’s new Ducks teammates suffered a major injury of his own. Goalie Tomas Suchanek, who notably played at a very high level in the AHL for the San Diego Gulls last season, has suffered a potentially season-ending injury after suffering a torn ACL.
The 21-year-old goalie is expected to be out for six to eight months, which could effectively end his 2024-25 season prematurely.
Staal was an elite defensive defenseman at his best . You could still see it here , he just had a broken wheel by the time he was here . Woulda taken him in his prime 27-34 year old for a defensive defenseman like that . Kudos to him for keeping at it
