Full Flyers Rookie Camp Guide: How to Watch, Things to Note
At long last, the Philadelphia Flyers have unveiled the roster and other information, including how to watch, for their annual rookie camp, which starts on Thursday, Sept. 12 at the Flyers Training Center in Voorhees, NJ.
Rookie camp officially starts on Thursday with an 11 a.m. practice scheduled to run until 12:30 p.m., which is open to the public.
The Flyers will have a 30-minute morning skate on Friday at the Training Center at 10:30 a.m. before the Rookie Series game against the New York Rangers at 7:05 p.m., which will be played at the PPL Center in Allentown, Pa., and live-streamed on the Philadelphia Flyers website.
The Rookie Series will wrap up on Saturday with a 5:05 p.m. finale against the Rangers, and then the Flyers rookies will practice at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday.
All practice sessions at the Flyers Training Center are open to the public. Fans who wish to travel to Allentown to watch the Rookie Series games can purchase tickets at PPLCenter.com.
Now that we have that sorted, let’s get to the players themselves, shall we?
Flyers Rookie Camp Roster
Forwards (15)
J.R. Avon, Denver Barkey, Sawyer Boulton, Nick Capone, Elliot Desnoyers, Jacob Gaucher, Alexis Gendron, Jett Luchanko, Matvei Michkov, Matt Miller, Massimo Rizzo, Santeri Sulku, Samu Tuomaala, Zayde Wisdom, Josh Zakreski
Zakreski, as I previously reported, is attending on an amateur tryout basis. Capone, who I mentioned in an article on Tuesday, has apparently signed an AHL contract with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms.
Capone, Boulton, Gaucher, and Miller are all listed as AHL contract players.
Defense (10)
Emil Andrae, Oliver Bonk, Emile Chouinard, Spencer Gill, Helge Grans, Matteo Mann, Hunter McDonald, Ethan Samson, Sam Sedley, Carter Sotheran
There are no true surprises in this group, but it is worth noting that Chouinard and Sedley are both AHL contract players. Both defensemen were at Flyers development camp in July and subsequently earned themselves pro contracts in the organization.
It’s also a pretty talented group, headlined by Andrae, Bonk, and Gill – all of whom are top-60 draft picks. I quietly believe Andrae has the best chance of playing NHL games at some point this season.
Goalies (2)
Carson Bjarnason, Sam Hillebrandt
The only item of note here is that Alexei Kolosov, who should have participated in the rookie camp, is not on the roster. I suppose it’s still possible he arrives in time for Flyers training camp a little bit later, but he appears to be a lost cause at this point in time, for all intents and purposes.
Bjarnason reprises his development camp role as the team’s sole representative in the crease; Hillebrandt is coming to town on a tryout basis. At development camp, the Flyers had invitees Matteo Drobac and Arthur Smith, but Smith is preparing for his sophomore season at Princeton University and there are no signs of Drobac.
In a few years, though, I’m sure Russian starlet Egor Zavragin will be joining Bjarnason at this camp as the Flyers hope one or both of their young draft picks evolves into the organization’s star goaltender of the future.
