Flyers Rookie Series Game Preview vs Rangers: Lines, How to Watch

Jett Luchanko

For the first time in five months, the Philadelphia Flyers finally have a hockey game to play.

On Friday night, at 7:05 p.m., the Flyers will head to the PPL Center in Allentown, PA, to face the New York Rangers rookies in the first of two Rookie Series games. The second will be played on Saturday, also at the PPL Center, at 5:05 p.m.

Both games will be streamed on the Philadelphia Flyers website.

So, who’s playing on Friday, you might ask?

Based on the game roster sent out by Flyers PR and line combinations from Thursday’s practice, here’s what I got:

Flyers Lines

Forwards (13)

Elliot Desnoyers – Jett Luchanko – Matvei Michkov

Alexis Gendron – Massimo Rizzo – Samu Tuomaala

Josh Zakreski (ATO) OR Santeri Sulku – J.R. Avon – Matt Miller (AHL)

Nick Capone (ATO) – Jacob Gaucher (AHL) – Sawyer Boulton (AHL)

Defense (6)

Hunter McDonald – Oliver Bonk

Emil Andrae – Spencer Gill

Sam Sedley (AHL) – Ethan Samson

Friday night’s starting goaltender is currently undetermined, and there’s a possibility that rookie camp invitee Sam Hillebrandt and 2023 second-round pick Carson Bjarnason share the crease in one or both of the Rookie Series games.

The scratches for the Flyers game against the Rangers include Carter Sotheran (illness), Zayde Wisdom, Helge Grans, Matteo Mann, Emile Chouinard, and Denver Barkey (illness).

Barkey did not play in any preseason games for the London Knights (Bonk did play in some) and reportedly is dealing with or recovering from mono, which adversely affects his conditioning and makes him a health risk if taking hits in a live-action game.

Sotheran is also dealing with a health issue, though it’s something he has managed for a while and takes medication for. The 19-year-old defenseman told media on Thursday afternoon that he has Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, which occurs when a person is born with an extra electrical pathway in their heart.

Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome can cause arrhythmia, tachycardia, dizziness or lightheadedness, shortness of breath, and heart palpitations. For a young professional athlete, you can see why the Flyers are managing Sotheran extra carefully. He’s got a long season to play in the WHL for the Portland Winterhawks, and that’s more important for his development as a player than some reps at a rookie camp.
