Flyers Trade Price for Top Goalie Prospect is Reportedly Steep

Published

Alexei Kolosov

With Alexei Kolosov still M.I.A. and training camp just days away, the Philadelphia Flyers trade rumors have commenced.

According to NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, a Flyers trade involving Alexei Kolosov is apparently possible, though inquiring teams will have to pony up a premium asset to make the deal happen.

In his latest “32 Thoughts” column, Friedman reports, “Philadelphia is still trying to figure out where things will go with Alexei Kolosov, who did not arrive to camp and remains in Russia. Teams who have inquired were told a second-round pick is the price, but, before anyone is willing to do so, they would have to figure out if Kolosov would join them.”

You may recall that Kolosov, 22, played two games for the Lehigh Valley Phantoms in the AHL in April, finished the Calder Cup playoffs, and subsequently returned home without a peep. Since then, information has been scarce, but we do know that Kolosov has passed up on attending Flyers development camp and, most recently, rookie camp.

There have been some reports that the Nashville Predators, who recently traded Yaroslav Askarov, and the Calgary Flames, who recently traded Jacob Markstrom, could be suitors for Kolosov’s services.

Between the two teams, Calgary is the most likely to give Kolosov playing time in the NHL if that is what he seeks. The Flames and the Predators each have two second-round picks in the 2025 NHL Draft—a draft that general manager Danny Briere and the Flyers have praised and one in which they already have three second-round picks.

Another situation to monitor is that of the Vancouver Canucks, as incumbent starter Thatcher Demko deals with a chronic injury and his backup, Arturs Silovs, is banged up himself. The Canucks recently added Kolosov’s backup from Dinamo Minsk, Dylan Ferguson, on a professional tryout offer.

Furthermore, the Canucks have Belarusian goalie prospect Nikita Tolopilo waiting in the wings should the language barrier continue to prove problematic.

As Friedman noted, a Flyers trade is clearly not imminent since suitors will need to get an idea of whether Kolosov will come to play for them. A steep asking price certainly adds intrigue to the situation, however.

I wouldn’t consider a second round pick as a steep asking price and I wouldn’t trade him for that. Throughout their history as we all know, goaltending has been a thorn in the side of the Flyers. They can’t take even the slightest chance that Kolosov is their best prospect and he turns into another Bobrovsky situation. It would be just another chapter in the goalie saga over the history of the team.
Toll his contract for this year and convince him to come over next year.

Keep worrying about a BOB situation all over again is nonproductive. Kolosov is a distraction to the team…move him now, and a 2nd round pick is very obtainable. Flyers have very good youthful goalie depth in their system….and will be drafting yet another goalie, or two in 2025. After this season Kolosov only has one more year left on his ELC….and then he becomes a restricted free agent after next season…and I seriously doubt he will be convinced to come next year….especially if Ersson and Fodotov shine this year…and Bjnarson is ready to step into an AHL slot with the Phantoms. Then there is also Yegor Z. also in Russia who will be goaltending in the KHL and is younger than Kolosov and some say is potentially better.

If his contract is tolled, then he doesn’t burn a second year off of his ELC. As usual goalies are a crap shoot and I wouldn’t take the chance of him being another great Russian goalie that we had and let go. With the team hiring the Russian KHL coach as a member of the staff, that would be another positive to have Kolosov come over next year. You can never have too many goalie prospects and I would take the conservative route and try to keep him in the fold.

If he is refusing the play for the Flyers, than a second round pick is much better than nothing. This is not a Bobrovsky situation. Bob wasn’t holding out. Management just wasn’t patient enough to let him develop and overpaid for Bryzgalov forcing Bob to a backup role.
