Flyers Prospects: Stock Up, Stock Down After 2024 Rookie Camp

Philadelphia Flyers news

The 2024 Philadelphia Flyers rookie camp officially came to a close on Tuesday, with training camp and the NHL preseason to follow shortly thereafter.

Understandably, Matvei Michkov was the star of the show, though the real test for the 19-year-old Russian sensation will begin when he faces NHL competition for the first time.

A number of Flyers prospects, especially the younger ones, made a positive impression at this year’s rookie camp. Some of those young prospects even outperformed their older peers, which is a development Flyers management will take in kind.

With that, we have some changes in the proverbial Philadelphia stock market.

Stock Up: D Spencer Gill

For me, 2024 second-round pick Spencer Gill was the best Flyers skater during 2024 rookie camp not named Matvei Michkov. The Flyers purportedly had a first-round draft grade on Gill leading into the 2024 draft in June, and it was easy to see why this past week.

Although he’s only 18 years old, Gill already shows a strong understanding of how to use his 6-foot-4 frame and long reach to disrupt and kill plays before they happen. The Moncton, N.B., native is visibly thin, though, and will need to add some muscle over time to fully tap into his physical style of play.

A strong puck mover who likes to jump into offensive plays as often as possible, I’d also like to see Gill become a little more fleet-footed. This will come as he improves his skating and develops stronger, more explosive legs.

Flyers fans should be really excited about Gill as he continues to grow over the next few years, especially with Oliver Bonk due to graduate to the NHL level in another season or two.

Stock Down: D Hunter McDonald

A full season in the AHL with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms would be good for Hunter McDonald.
