Flyers’ Youth Takeover Begins; Winger Faces Big Question

It appears the Philadelphia Flyers have officially set their youth takeover in motion after the spectacular 6-2 preseason win over the hosts, the Washington Capitals, on Sunday afternoon.

Five forwards aged 25 or younger had a multi-point game against the Capitals, which is a development the Flyers can only hope bleeds into the 2024-25 regular season and beyond. The sensational offensive display wasn’t a representation of last year’s performances, though.

Rather, it was the fruits of offseason work, whether it be from the Flyers’ front office or the players themselves.

“Consistency” was a word Morgan Frost used a few times when addressing media after Day 2 of training camp on Friday. “I feel like every year has been the biggest year for me,” Frost said. Playing on a line with Owen Tippett and rookie Matvei Michkov, who continued to display remarkable chemistry with Frost en route to two assists against the Caps, will play a big role in finding that consistency.

Opportunity and luck are half of the battle, and taking advantage of that is the other half. The more confident Frost grows playing in this role, the more he’ll produce. The rest takes care of itself.

Joel Farabee is a player who’s still young at 24 but facing stiff competition for a place in the top-six after a dismal end to the 2023-24 campaign. He responded to the trade rumors and the chatter with a goal and three assists against Washington whilst being a steady contributor on the power play and the penalty kill.

Farabee meshed well with 2024 first-round pick Jett Luchanko, who won’t make the Flyers’ NHL roster this year but already looks the part in his young professional career. Luchanko, Farabee, and Bobby Brink played 9:09 together at 5-on-5 on Sunday, out-chancing opponents 9-5 and scoring two goals.

Oh, and high-danger chances were 7-3 in favor of the Flyers with those three on the ice.

Bobby Brink Makes a Statement

Speaking of Bobby Brink, he is one of the Flyers’ biggest question marks heading into the 2024-25 season, but it looks like the 23-year-old is out to make a statement after finishing the 2023-24 season on John Tortorella’s bench… against Washington.
