Flyers News
Don’t cry because it’s over; smile because it happened!
Although Rimouski Oceanic defenseman and top Philadelphia Flyers prospect Spencer Gill was among the team’s first training camp cuts (as mostly expected), the 18-year-old impressed John Tortorella and the Flyers enough to immediately earn his three-year, entry-level contract.
With another strong season in the QMJHL under his belt, it is easy to imagine Gill getting an extended preseason run this time next year like the one fellow Flyers prospects Jett Luchanko and Oliver Bonk are getting now.
Speaking of preseason and cuts, the Flyers didn’t give Ronnie Attard much of a look and cut him shortly after his brutal performance against Montreal, so management is being decisive and ruthless in its quest to improve the Flyers.
That’s good news for players like Bonk and Gill who will soon be knocking on the door for an opportunity to play in the NHL.
NHL News
As a team aspiring to compete for the Stanley Cup, the Los Angeles Kings received some devastating news on Wednesday night regarding former Norris Trophy winner Drew Doughty.
After an awkward collision with former Kings teammate and Vegas Golden Knights forward Tanner Pearson, Doughty’s left leg was smashed into the boards, causing him to break his ankle.
Kings head coach Jim Hiller has since revealed that the team expects Doughty to return this season and is month-to-month.
With the two-time Stanley Cup champion on the shelf for the foreseeable future, the Kings may emerge as a fit for some experienced defensemen on the waiver wire with training camp roster cuts ongoing around the league.
One name that stands out is Flyers veteran Louie Belpedio, though the Kings may feel more inclined to give ice time to their two best defense prospects, Brandt Clarke and Jordan Spence.
If Doughty is out a minimum of 6-8 weeks, Kings may want another right hand defenseman shot……wonder if they would ask the Flyers about Risto.
Kolosov was in net yesterday at the Voorhees practice session……waiting to hear what Torts will be saying. Hope this does not get blown up into any distraction.
Yep! I wasn’t there yesterday but I know that Torts was asked about Kolosov and he didn’t seem interested in talking about him, which was probably planned. I also don’t think Torts knows much about the kid anyway, so I guess we’ll see how it goes.
Ronnie Attard waived.
“Great kid, has all the tools,” Tortorella said . “The biggest thing for me is I just want Ronnie to be able to see the ice, read the ice……….:”
Had to chuckle…..was waiting for Torts to give the old Caddyshack line…see the ice, read the ice, be the ice.
