Bailey’s Daily: Flyers Burnt Out; Macklin Celebrini Injury

In Wednesday’s edition of Bailey’s Daily, we’ll be talking the latest Philadelphia Flyers news, NHL news, stories, highlights, and more from the last day.
Flyers News
After an anemic 4-1 loss to the Boston Bruins on Tuesday night, Philadelphia Flyers head coach John Tortorella conceded that his group is “a little tired”.
That might be underselling it, as the Flyers were badly outperformed despite fielding most of their NHL regulars, with the exception of a handful of prospects.
Veteran forward Anthony Richard, one of the newcomers pushing the hardest for an NHL roster spot with the Flyers, was again one of the standouts in the exhibition contest. Richard routinely used his speed and anticipation to create advantageous situations, especially in the neutral and offensive zones.
The roster battle between Richard, Olle Lycksell, and Jett Luchanko may take until the final preseason game on Thursday to reach a verdict.
In case you missed it, Alexei Kolosov made his Flyers debut in the team’s last preseason game Monday night against the New York Islanders and… he looked pretty good!
Kolosov only faced eight shots and saved seven of them, but I expect he will see a full 60 minutes on Thursday against the New Jersey Devils.
NHL News
The NHL preseason is starting to take its toll across the league, and in the most negative way possible.
Though Patrik Laine and the Montreal Canadiens received some good news regarding his knee injury, injuries are piling up around the league.
Farther west, the San Jose Sharks are not going to be happy with the fact that star rookie and No. 1 overall pick Macklin Celebrini left the preseason game against the Vegas Golden Knights with a lower-body injury and did not return.
The NHL and NHLPA have already chatted about it and will do so more seriously in CBA talks: reduce pre-season to 4 games (and add 2 games to regular season to make it 84).
That’s the idea anyway. We’ll see where it goes in CBA talks.— Pierre LeBrun (@PierreVLeBrun) October 2, 2024
Given that these are only preseason games, it is entirely possible that the Sharks were just being cautious with Celebrini, but the injuries to him, Laine and Artemi Panarin (lower-body) aren’t good looks for the NHL.
The NHL is also reportedly looking to cut the preseason in half in favor of more regular season games, but those talks are still in the preliminary stages.
Reducing pre-season games to four and adding two regular season games…..a page out of the NFL play-book. Next there will be two pre-season games and inter-team practice sessions in controlled scrimmages…..another page from the same NFL book.
Will these changes occur before or after the Flyers trade Kolosov and Risto?
LOL…..very good.
I don’t see how dropping two preseason games and adding two regular season games changes anything. It’s still the same number of games.
If anything, it puts additional workload on the stars in the League who might otherwise sit some of these preseason games out.
I don’t know the specifics of the high profile injuries noted, but unless they’re the result of cheap shots by players who won’t make the NHL rosters anyway, it won’t accomplish anything.
If anything, trim the season down! But, it won’t happen! Got to make that money with those 82 games!
No worries . We are still a year away . Bruins aren’t of concern . Devils and maple leafs and rangers ARE. Let bonk go down for one more year . Would love to see lachenko here under Tortorella if he can handle that but no pressure . Adols can hang for a year with us
