Bailey’s Daily: Flyers Need Fedotov; Letang Calls Penguins Out

In Saturday’s edition of Bailey’s Daily, we’ll be talking the latest Philadelphia Flyers news, NHL news, stories, highlights, and more from the last day.
Flyers News
The Philadelphia Flyers have started the 2024-25 season without a single win in regulation or overtime, with their lone tally in the win column coming in the shootout over the Vancouver Canucks in the very first game of the season.
Well, the Orange and Black had a pretty good chance of beating the Seattle Kraken on Thursday night and coming home to the Wells Fargo Center with an evenly-split four-game road trip under their belts. That is no longer the case after the Flyers once again self-immolated at the worst possible time, giving them losses in three consecutive games heading into Saturday’s home-opener rematch against Vancouver.
Backup goalie Ivan Fedotov got his second start of the season against the Kraken on Thursday night and struggled once again. Between that game and his previous start against the Calgary Flames, Fedotov has already allowed 10 goals this season on just 55 shots.
By the numbers, the 27-year-old is playing just as bad as he did at the end of last season, despite the circumstances being massively improved from just a few months ago.
Online, Flyers fans are already calling for 22-year-old Belarusian goalie prospect Alexei Kolosov, but such a move would take a large amount of jumping through hoops, at least for now. The Flyers lack the roster flexibility to do so with Emil Andrae occupying Nick Seeler’s place, as Seeler is still on injured reserve for the time being.
And, simply put, Kolosov has not exactly shot the lights out in the AHL playing against much weaker competition, so this situation in net is not going to be resolved any time soon.
There is only one way to view this, and it’s that the Flyers need Fedotov. They need him to keep working and they need him to keep trying.
Fedotov is obviously a work in progress and he will have to learn on the fly this season, but the Flyers are completely out of other options for now. The immediate future of the team rests on his and Sam Ersson’s shoulders.
NHL News
The good news is that the Flyers are not the only Metropolitan Division team having a hard time at the start of the year, and they certainly are not the only team with a problem in the goal crease.
Longtime Pittsburgh Penguins star Kris Letang was swinging the bat after an embarrassing 4-1 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes, calling out the effort and the willpower of his teammates postgame.
“They worked harder than us and they got rewarded for it,” said Letang.
If you are a Penguins player, that is not exactly a ringing endorsement of your effort coming from a guy who has won three Stanley Cups and is likely to be a first-ballot Hockey Hall of Famer when he hangs the skates up.
At the other end of the ice, Penguins goalie Tristan Jarry has not played exceedingly well after inking a big-money contract on July 1, 2023. His counterpart, Alex Nedeljkovic, just defeated Kolosov in an AHL game as part of a conditioning stint coming off injury.
These Penguins aren’t getting any younger, and they certainly do not appear to be getting any better.
Still very early in the season to signal out projected collapses or Stanley Cup finalists. I believe Christmas —around the 30/35th game– marks the timeframe when teams start to separate themselves from the pack and one can judge how a team will fare.
Kolosov gave up 4 goals in the first period last night….but came on strong in the last two almost preserving a comeback by the Phantoms who eventually lost it to the Pens’ farm 4-3.
