Bailey’s Daily: Former Flyers Goalie Honored; Luke Hughes Injury Update
In Thursday’s edition of Bailey’s Daily, we’ll be talking the latest Philadelphia Flyers news, NHL news, stories, highlights, and more from the last day.
Flyers News
After a devastating sixth loss in a row, the Philadelphia Flyers have fallen to a dismal 1-5-1 record after the Washington Capitals survived for a 6-3 victory on Wednesday night.
Travis Konecny picked up his third goal of the year, while Owen Tippett showed some signs of life and finally erased the good ol’ donut next to his name. Sean Couturier continues to be effective in limited minutes, and Matvei Michkov continues to be the Flyers’ best player overall.
You have to take the good with the bad, but when you lose six of seven games to start the year, there’s more good than bad.
Earlier on Wednesday, it was revealed that former Flyers goalie Michael Leighton, who carried the Orange and Black to the 2010 Stanley Cup Final and allowed Patrick Kane’s series-clinching goal, is going to be joining the AHL Hall of Fame as a member of the class of 2025.
Leighton spent parts of four seasons with the Flyers, playing in 28 regular season games, posting a 19-8-2 record, a .910 save percentage, a 2.76 GAA, and one shutout. Leighton is first in AHL history in games played by a goalie, wins, and shutouts.
In case you missed it, veteran defenseman Erik Johnson spoke with Philly Hockey Now about the team’s struggles, analyzing some areas in which the Flyers can be better and revealing the message he’s conveying to his younger teammates in these trying times.
NHL News
Good news for the New Jersey Devils, and bad news for the rest of the Metropolitan Division.
Young star defenseman Luke Hughes and prized free agent signing Brett Pesce are both traveling with the Devils on their upcoming road trip, which bodes well for the chances the two talented rearguards make their season debuts at some point in the next few days.
Elsewhere in the Metro, Pittsburgh Penguins goalie Alex Nedeljkovic shouldered the blame after the Pens dropped a 4-3 shootout decision against the Calgary Flames on Tuesday.
With $26.9 million goalie Tristan Jarry sitting and watching, perfectly healthy, from the press box, somebody better step up in Pittsburgh…
The Colorado Avalanche re-assigned 19-year-old rookie center Calum Ritchie to the OHL Oshawa Generals on Wednesday, signaling the end of his time in the NHL… for now.
At some point in the near future, Ritchie will be supplanted in the lineup by Jonathan Drouin, Valeri Nichushkin, and Gabriel Landeskog, who are all working their way back to the ice from very different issues.
Maybe the Flyers might want to do the same with Jett Luchanko after all this losing…
