Bailey’s Daily: Flyers Lose in Kolosov’s Debut; Marchand Contract Situation

In Monday’s edition of Bailey’s Daily, we’ll be talking the latest Philadelphia Flyers news, NHL news, stories, highlights, and more from the last day.
Flyers News
Rookie goalie Aleksei Kolosov (yes, Aleksei, not Alexei! I have already double-checked with Flyers PR, for your future reference) made his NHL debut for the Philadelphia Flyers on Sunday night against the Montreal Canadiens, and suffice to say, it didn’t go according to plan.
Kolosov actually played pretty well, but he also allowed a soft goal to Cole Caufield on the power play, allowing a near-side shot to slip through his right arm while trying to seal his post.
Considering it was his first NHL game and he’s spent maybe nine weeks of his life in this country, I’m not particularly worried about Kolosov.
Scott Laughton and John Tortorella both made it a point to note that they thought Kolosov played well, and I like to think they know what they’re talking about.
In case you missed it, the Flyers sent rookie center Jett Luchanko back to the Guelph Storm of the OHL on Saturday, and the writing was apparently on the wall long before the roster move was actually made.
Tortorella and Flyers GM Danny Briere eventually came to an agreement that Luchanko, 18, was best served playing regular minutes in the OHL and learning how to be an offensive play-driver against weaker opponents.
“It was a good learning experience for me. That’s the biggest takeaway from it for me,” Luchanko said after returning to Guelph. “I was able to see what goes on there on a day-to-day basis and bring that back here to learn and help guys on our team as well.”
NHL News
Boston Bruins winger Brad Marchand is in the final year of an eight-year, $49 million contract he signed with the Bruins on Sept. 26, 2016.
This week, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman reported that the 36-year-old former Stanley Cup champion was nearing an extension with the Bruins at or around three years in length, and then Marchand came forth to publicly deny the report himself.
“Elliotte likes talking about me this week,” Marchand rebuffed. “I’m not going to talk about contract stuff in the media. That report from Elliotte is false. If I was going to sign a three-year extension, it would be signed. Clearly, Elliotte is just wrong there.”
It is worth noting that the Bruins and Marchand’s camp have been having discussions about a potential contract extension for some time now, but we know the Bruins don’t exactly work fast.
Remember how long it took for goalie Jeremy Swayman to agree to and sign his big contract extension?
Anyways, Marchand has 18 goals, 31 assists, 49 points, and a plus-24 plus-minus rating in 51 career games against the Flyers.
The day he leaves Boston or retires, Philadelphians will celebrate!
