Flyers Trade
Flyers Named Potential Frontrunners for David Jiricek Trade
As trade talks and rumors continue to heat up around the NHL, the Philadelphia Flyers have been named as a potential trade destination for one of the hottest names on the market: Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman David Jiricek.
Jiricek, 20, has bounced around between the AHL and NHL for the majority of his Blue Jackets career, and as a result, the relationship between the player and the organization has deteriorated greatly in recent months.
Consequentially, the Blue Jackets are now weighing their options and will seriously consider a trade package that matches their valuation of Jiricek.
NHL insider Elliotte Friedman believes that the Flyers are one such team capable of satisfying Columbus’s trade criteria.
Flyers have pieces to pull off David Jiricek trade
In his latest “32 Thoughts” podcast episode, Friedman reveals that there are some teams who feel they are closing in on a potential deal with the Blue Jackets for Jiricek. Friedman did not specifically name the Flyers as one of those teams, though he believes the Flyers, by name, have the assets to make it happen.
“I don’t like to mention it all the time. We know the situation is out there,” Friedman said of Jiricek. “I did hear on Saturday there were some rumors of some teams who thought they might be getting close. But, (Jiricek) played in the American Hockey League on Saturday night. I think if he was close to getting dealt, he probably wouldn’t have played that night.
“I’ve heard they’re looking for a young player – a similar young player. Maybe someone who hasn’t ‘popped’ yet.”
As a rebuilding team with one of the youngest rosters in the NHL, the Flyers certainly fit the bill.
“Another team that’s got a lot of young players, but I don’t know how they feel about this, is Philadelphia,” Friedman said. “I’m looking at teams who’ve got young players who maybe haven’t popped yet and you could make that kind of a deal.
“I don’t know if there’s a favorite here.”
Because Jiricek has NHL experience, the Blue Jackets would likely want a player with NHL experience back. Given the Flyers’ logjam at the winger position, Tyson Foerster, a sophomore forward on an expiring contract, would make some sense.
By making a move like that, the Flyers could strengthen their pool of defense prospects while also giving an opportunity to players like Anthony Richard, Olle Lycksell, and Samu Tuomaala. It could also open a path to more playing time for a guy like Bobby Brink.
Veteran winger Joel Farabee, who is still only 24, is another name that has been thrown out in rumors a fair bit. Columbus could use the upgrade in their top-six, but Farabee’s contract length and salary could be tough to commit to.
At the other end of the ice, it wouldn’t make too much sense to move off Emil Andrae or Helge Grans so early. The oft-injured Jamie Drysdale matches the criteria in theory, but the Flyers needed an extra second-round pick from the Anaheim Ducks to make the Cutter Gauthier deal possible.
The Blue Jackets have had a scout at the Wells Fargo Center on multiple occasions this season, so it’s possible there’s some dialogue being had there. This more circumstantial evidence of that than hard proof, but on paper, the Flyers and the Blue Jackets are logical trade partners here.
Wonder if the Flyers would deal Frost to the Jax for Jiricek…at first glance it would appear to be a slight over-payment based on the NHL experience of Frost….but cap hit/money-wise it would be okay….Frost has a cap hit of approx $2M….and Jiricek on his ELC @ $200K…a plus $1.8M for the Flyers in savings. It does hurt the center position on the team when it comes to depth there, so they would have to juggle Cates, or Poehling or Laughton in that position.
Jonathan –
I understand that Juricek was a high draft pick, but I don’t get the valuation that some are putting on him.
You correctly (in my opinion) suggest an AHL player who is ready to pop, but others seem to think we should be trading Morgan Frost and adding draft picks to whatever player we send to them.
I guess I just don’t see why we’d overpay for a high draft pick that Columbus is ready to give up on.
Am I missing something here?
It’s less that Columbus wants to give up on him and more that he has given up on Columbus. I don’t actually think Frost has that much trade value at all, and I think Jiricek’s valuation is in the ballpark of what the Flyers received for Gauthier (Drysdale and a 2nd). Remember, Jiricek is still only 20 and has already played a good amount of NHL games. Many believe that he can be a top pairing player in spite of his average mobility. He’s big, physical, and can shoot it. The question is now, who can make Jiricek the best Jiricek?
Perhaps the Flyers are showcasing Grans for Jax. I do like what Grans has shown so far…..and he does have more than enough AHL experience. Similar in size also to Jiricek if that is part of the equation with RH shot.
Or maybe even Jamie Drysdale to Columbus for Jiricek. Flyers will need to make a tough decision, as what happens in the NHL Torts has said the other day with regard to Richard, soon when Drysdale gets fully healthy and is cleared to play.
I would do Drysdale for Jiricek. Drysdale has been disappointing and appears injury-prone.
As for Frost’s trade value, an indication could be the Penguins recent trade for Philip Tomasino, acquired from Nashville for a 4th round pick. A couple years younger than Frost but both were late first-round picks and have comparable points per game averages in the NHL (0.44 to 0.47). Frost has more NHL games than Tomasino, but a 4th round pick, maybe a 3rd rounder if someone is generous, is all we can expect for Frost straight up.
Would be great for the Flyers and trade value, for Frost to explode on the offensive side
“…while also giving an opportunity to players like Anthony Richard, Olle Lycksell, and Samu Tuomaala.”
Would also like to see Gendron come up for a few games to get some seasoning.
I was at a couple of Phantoms games two weeks ago and Gendron was the best player they had on the ice. You KNEW he was out there.
Even my daughter noticed when he was on-ice
Gendron has a ton of skill for sure. I think it would take more movement to get him in at the NHL level this year and I think the team would prefer him to get a full year in at the AHL level first. That all said, I recognize that development isn’t always linear like that. I do know that the org. likes him, so he has that working in his favor.
Wow! Hear’s something you don’t read every day on this site a trade rumor!!!
Zzzz…Zzzzz…….
If people don’t read it, I don’t write it. Ok, anything else, or just that?
Nah… Just that Jon. Keep up the good work. The endless trade rumors that never happen gets a little boring. To me at least.
I enjoy your work. Enjoy your Thanksgiving!
Well, thank you for reading and supporting! I just try not to have the negativity here. I try to write something for everyone and I work hard at that. Trade rumors are all the talk right now, so that’s how it’s probably going to be for a few days until something happens or it cools off. You enjoy your Thanksgiving as well!
Here’s something for you, bet your grammar teacher is proud of you Larry.
Haa… Sorry GMan… “Here’s”… My bad.
Please don’t tell Sister Saint Herman, she’ll beat the livin’ shit out of me again!
Enjoy your Thanksgiving!
Do the deal! I’m all in on the Jiricek trade train. Big, skilled, righty. Do it
I do not want another player on this roster that can’t be sent down to the AHL because it will hurt his feelings.
I’m not moving anything to get Jirichek. I’m hoping Danny stays the course and stays patient. We have a lot of defensive depth in the organization, and I don’t want a player who’s skating is not considered an asset. I like how Grans and Andrea have played, but one of them is going back to the AHL when Drysdale comes off IR since they Flyers are at the 23-man roster limit. They also have a decision to make when Errson comes off IR. Do they keep 3 goalies or send Kolosov down? They currently have Ginning and McDonald in the AHL with Bonk, Gill, and Sotheran in juniors. If they are going to move assets it should be for a center.
