The Philadelphia Flyers improved to 19-20-5 with their 4-3 comeback win over the defending Stanley Cup Champion Florida Panthers Monday night.

After an underwhelming first period from the Flyers, the final 40 minutes featured some of the most impressive hockey the team has played this season, leading to the team’s big win.

Garnet Hathaway, Morgan Forst, and Noah Cates all scored for the Flyers.

Settling In

After playing a pivotal role in the Flyers’ shutout win against the Anaheim Ducks on Saturday, both Jamie Drysdale and Sam Ersson had quite the ugly first period.

Ersson gave up two goals early in the first period, the first coming from a difficult angle by Sam Reinhart. Regardless, Ersson was able to brush off the two early goals against him, settle in, and take command of the goal for the remainder of the game.

After one of the best games in his Flyers tenure against Anaheim, Drysdale looked sluggish opening Monday’s game. Like Ersson, Drysdale came out of the first intermission a completely different player. Drysdale earned an assist on Morgan Frost’s game-tying power-play goal.

“W played at a speed that I don’t know what speed we’re playing at the first period. Give them credit. They rebounded and found a way to get involved. This time of year, after a good win we had the other night, playing against one of the top teams in the league, and to come back against them gives you a little bit of juice,” Flyers’ head coach John Tortorella said after Monday’s game.

Power Play Strikes Again

With scores from Noah Cates and Morgan Frost on the power play, the Flyers have scored power-play goals in back-to-back games.

The Flyers’ power play was ranked 28th in the league heading into Monday’s contest. After a painful first period, including two disappointing power play chances, the Flyers’ man-advantage unit was crucial in Monday’s win.

Two-Goal Third Period for Noah Cates

Not only did Noah Cates score a power-play goal to tie the game at two early in the third period, but he later added a second score, giving the Flyers their first and only lead of the night.

Cates now has 10 points in his last 10 games and 14 in the previous 15. Cates, along with the Flyers’ third line (Foerster—Cates—Brink), has been very productive for the Flyers as of late.

Flyer forward Garnet Hathaway sang high praise for Cates after his big night.

“To be able to see him you say, you know, take a step, but to keep going to his potential. I don’t think he’s done either,” Hathaway said. “He plays the game the right way. And I think if he keeps doing that, he knows that’ll lead to offense.”

What’s Next for the Flyers

The Flyers will travel to Columbus on Tuesday to face the Blue Jackets. Puck drop is at 7 p.m. EST in Nationwide Arena.
