Ahead of Monday’s match-up against the Florida Panthers, Comcast Spectacor, the ownership group of the Philadelphia Flyers, and Harris-Blitzer, the ownership group of the Philadelphia 76ers, announced their partnership on a new arena for the two teams.

Per the press release, the arena will be “a 50-50 joint venture to build a world-class, state-of-the-art arena in the South Philadelphia Sports Complex that will be the new home of the Philadelphia 76ers and Philadelphia Flyers and one of the finest, most technologically advanced, and sustainable sports and entertainment arenas in the country.”

The Wells Fargo Center opened in 1996 and has been home to the 76ers and Flyers since.

The Sixers are Staying in South Philly

The biggest news is that the Flyers’ current roommate at the Wells Fargo Center, the 76ers, is staying in South Philadelphia.

The Sixers initially planned to move to the new 76 Place at Market East after the Philadelphia City Council approved the team’s $1.3 billion plan to build a state-of-the-art arena in the Chinatown area of Philadelphia.

After reportedly being talked into staying by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, NFL Commissioner Rodger Goodell, and Comcast President Brian Roberts, the Sixers have nixed the Market East plans and will remain in South Philadelphia.

The press release also stated that Comcast will take on a minority stake in the 76ers and join the Harris Blitzer group in their attempt to bring a WNBA team to Philly.

Flyers Getting Involved with Market East?

Since the $1.3 billion plan for 76 Place is no longer in place, the Sixers, along with Comcast, will still revitalize the Market East area in a 50-50 partnership. While they will not build the arena in the area, they will still “focus on Market East” in an effort to “develop a variety of options to revitalize a vital neighborhood in Center City.”

“The partnership will also include a 50-50 venture to invest in the revitalization of Market East in Center City,” the press release said.

While no plans for the Market East location have been released, it can be safe to assume that both the Flyers and Sixers will be involved in the new plans, one way or another.

The new arena is expected to open its doors by 2031.
