Brink’s Power-Play Goal Lifts Flyers Over Devils 3-1 on Saturday

The Flyers beat the New Jersey Devils 3-1 at the Prudential Center on Saturday, picking up two crucial points in a Metropolitan showdown.
Tyson Foerster had a two-point game (2A) on his birthday, and Matvei Michkov, Bobby Brink, and Travis Konecny all scored for the Flyers on Saturday.
The Flyers improved to 21-20-6 with their win over the Devils.
Slow Start, Strong Finish
The Devils jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after a Dougie Hamilton shot evaded traffic and snuck past Sam Ersson, who likely never even saw the puck with all of the bodies in front.
The Flyers started the game sluggish, but Matvei Michkov’s breakaway score to tie the game in the second period turned the tides for Philadelphia. Though the Flyers may not have had an offensive outburst, they were able to settle in and match the Devils’ energy.
Bobby Brink’s power-play goal threw the Devils into a late-game panic, and they began to play sloppy. The Flyers were able to hold on to their lead, with Travis Konecny’s empty-netter sealing the deal.
Block Party
Sam Ersson tacked on another excellent performance Saturday, continuing his stretch of impressive starts coming out of the holiday break.
While Ersson’s performance was key for the Flyers win, the defense stepped up in a big way.
The Flyers had 31 blocked shots in Saturday’s win, helping their netminder against one of the league’s premier offenses. Ersson only saw 14 shots from the Devils, stopping 13 of them.
Heading into the game, the Flyers averaged 18.36 blocked shots per game. The Flyers nearly doubled that number on Saturday despite playing without their top shot-blocking forward, Ryan Poehling.
What’s Next for the Flyers
The Flyers will head back home as they are set to host the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday, with puck drop set for 7:30 p.m.
