Flyers Game Day Preview: #47 AT New Jersey Devils

After a 5-3 win on Thursday led by multi-assist efforts from Travis Konecny (3A) and Joel Farabee (2A), the Philadelphia Flyers (20-20-6) will head to Newark, New Jersey to take on Jack Hughes and the New Jersey Devils (26-15-6).
The Flyers have been building some momentum in their last four, taking three of four and coming away with a point in each. They are 5-4-2 since the holiday break.
In that same time span, the Devils are 3-4-3 and are coming off four straight overtime games, including two overtime losses (vs NYR. TOR), a shootout loss to Toronto, and an overtime win against the Lightning.
Puck drop is set for 12:30 p.m. EST. in the Prudential Center.

Poehling Injury
After exiting Thursday’s game with an “upper-body” injury, Flyers forward Ryan Poehling will not play Saturday against New Jersey. Instead, Olle Lycksell will draw in. Lycksell skated on the fourth line at the team’s practice Friday, with Laughton moving to center.
John Tortorella did not give any further update on Poehling’s status, just that he would not play on Saturday.
Poehling has 15 points–four goals and 11 assists–this season and has primarily played on the fourth line, with the exception of a few games in which he centered the Flyers’ top line.
Special Teams Matchup
The Devils have one of the best special teams in the NHL. Currently, the Devils have scored 38 power-play goals, and their power-play percentage is 28.8%, which puts them third in the NHL for both stats. Their penalty kill percentage is 82.2%, which is good for 10th in the league.
In comparison, the Flyers have the 28th-ranked power play percentage in the league, scoring just 16% of their power play attempts. They have 21 power-play goals, which is 27th across the NHL, and the 22nd-ranked penalty kill percentage, 77.5%.
The Devils outmatch the Flyers in every special teams aspect. It should go without saying, but the Flyers will want to keep this game at 5-on-5 as much as they can.
Chasing Lane
From December 10th through January 9th, Flyers rookie Matvei Michkov has just two points, both of which came against the Los Angeles Kings on Dec. 29th.
The 20-year-old forward went through a cold spell beyond imagination for how well the Flyers rookie had been playing. Since that Jan. 9th game against Dallas, Michkov has three points in four games, and is looking to get his name back atop the Calder ladder.
Sharks rookie forward Macklin Celebrini and Michkov are tied for second in rookie scoring with 32 points (both have 13 G, 19A), four points shy of Canadian’s rookie defenseman Lane Hutson, who has 36 total points (3G, 33A).
Michkov will look to keep scoring Saturday when the Flyers take on the Devils as he chases Lane Hutson for the rookie scoring lead.
Previous Matchups
Saturday is the first time the Flyers and Devils will face each other in the 2024/25 season. In their last 10 previous games, the Flyers are 5-4-1 against the Devils and went 2-1-1 against New Jersey last season.
The two teams faced off in the NHL Stadium Series last season at Metlife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The Devils won that game, their lone regulation win against the Flyers last season.
