Aleksei Kolosov, Philadelphia Flyers

Per Flyers PR, the Philadelphia Flyers have sent 23-year-old goaltender Aleksei Kolosov back down to their AHL affiliate, the Lehigh Valley Phantoms.

In a corresponding move, the Flyers have recalled forward Anthony Richard.

This comes just after Flyers general manager Daniel Briere spoke about the goaltending during his mid-season evaluation on Tuesday.

Briere hinted that having three goaltenders up at the NHL was to help limit the strain on Sam Ersson and other netminders but also said that the team would be practicing less down the stretch.

One could only assume that meant the Kolosov movement would be imminent, and now we have our answer.

Forward Olle Lycksell (0 points in 6 games) is also heading to Lehigh Valley.

Kolosov this Season

It has not been the NHL season that Aleksei Kolosov imagined for himself when he reported back to the Flyers late in training camp/preseason.

Kolosov went 4-8-1 in his 13 starts this season. He appeared in 15 total games, earning a .870 save percentage and a 3.45 goals-against average. He did not spend much time in Lehigh Valley, but Kolosov went 1-2-1 in his games with the Phantoms this year with a .875SV% and 3.29 goals-against average–not much better than his NHL numbers.

This move will benefit Kolosov’s development. He clearly was not ready for the NHL game; getting reps in at Lehigh will allow him to build some confidence back up and continue to grow as a player. If he can show signs of improvement, maybe he can rejoin the Flyers down the stretch if needed.

Richard Recalled

The initial move to bring Rodrigo Abols up instead of Anthony Richard to replace Ryan Poehling was puzzling initially, but it made sense given the immediate need for a fourth-line center.

Now, Richard gets his call with Kolosov heading back to the AHL.

In his seven games with the Flyers earlier this season, Richard earned six points on two goals and four assists. For Lehigh Valley this season,  Richard tallied eight goals and 11 assists (19 TP) in 18 games for Lehigh.

Richard and the Flyers will play the New York Rangers on Thursday. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. EST at Madison Square Garden.

Richard gets re-united with Abols…they may be a good coupling on the 4th line…..size, speed and familiarity.
