Battle to Extend the Point Streak

Both the Philadelphia Flyers and New York Rangers are carrying point streaks into Thursday’s game.

The Flyers are on a six-game point streak, going 5-0-1. During that time, they have outscored opponents 22-10, with their lone loss being against the Blue Jackets in a shootout (the game was tied 2-2).

The Rangers currently have a nine-game point streak, a record of 6-0-3, and a goal differential of +13.

Unless the game heads to overtime, one team will lose their point streak.

Top-Notch PK vs. Struggling Power Play

One thing to keep an eye on for the Flyers will be the Rangers penalty-kill unit against their power play.

The Rangers have the fourth-best penalty-killing percentage in the NHL, at 83.6%. That will make it quite the tough matchup for the Flyers’ struggling power play, which is 29th in the NHL at 16.4%. Also, how many matchups do we see where adding one team’s PP% with their opponent’s PK% equals 100%? That is a meaningless stat, but I thought it was interesting.

Previous Matchup

The Flyers have not had the best of luck against the New York Rangers in recent history. They are 3-4-3 against the Rangers in the last 10 meetings, but they have the upper hand in the current season series.

Philly beat New York 3-1 in the first meeting between the two teams in late November. Travis Konecny leads the Flyers in scoring against the Rangers over the last 10 games, as Konecny played in eight games, scoring four goals and two assists.

“Also, how many matchups do we see where adding one team’s PP% with their opponent’s PK% equals 100%?” Funny and clever comment, William. Flyers really need this game tonight. Both teams are playing well and it’s a VERY important Metro Division game. GO FLYERS!!
