The Philadelphia Flyers lost their second game in as many days, falling to the New York Islanders 3-1 on Friday night.

Philly was battling the injury bug early on in the game, giving the Islanders the upper hand.

Tyson Foerster broke the ice, but three unanswered Islander goals would hand the Flyers their second straight loss.

The Flyers’ record dropped to 22-22-6 with Friday’s loss.

Fast Start, Slow Finish… Again

For the second night in a row, the Flyers struck early in the first period to take a 1-0 lead. Tyson Foerster ripped a perfect shot to beat Ilya Sorokin blocker side.

Stop me if this sounds familiar–after the quick score, it was all Islanders from there.

I will give the Flyers some credit. For a good part of the first period, the Flyers were playing with five defensemen. That included one who hadn’t played in over two months.

Cam York left the first period after being leveled by Alexander Romanov (clean hit, by the way). York would later return, but the Islanders took advantage of the run-down Flyers’ defense, scoring two goals in less than a minute and never looking back.

A late-game push by the Flyers came, but with no real dangerous chances, the Islanders held on to the 3-1 lead.

Erik Johnson’s Return

For the first time since November 20th (vs. Carolina), Erik Johnson’s name was called, and he was drawn into the lineup.

Johnson was called to replace Egor Zamula in the lineup, who was scratched from the lineup after sustaining an “upper-body ailment” prior to Friday’s game.

Though it had been more than 60 days since his last appearance in the lineup, Johnson seemingly did not lose a step and played rather well. He earned an assist on Foerster’s goal and looked like one of the better defensemen for the Flyers.

With Zamula and York possibly banged up, it was a positive sign to see Johnson playing without much rust.

What’s Next for the Flyers

The Flyers will not play again until January 27th, when they host the New Jersey Devils. Puck drop is a 7 P.M. EST at the Wells Fargo Center.
