Flyers Shut Out by Devils, Fall 5-0 Wednesday Night

The Philadelphia Flyers fell back to .500 (23-23-6) after being shut out by the New Jersey Devils 5-0 Wednesday night in Newark.
After a tense but no-score first period, the Devils had a four-goal second period and another goal in the third period. The Flyers could not find an answer for Jake Allen Wednesday night.
The Flyers’ performance was all-around ugly. Turnovers led to odd-man rushes, which did not help the goaltending and, again, the team’s inability to crack Allen; the Flyers will not want to remember Wednesday night for long.
Tippett Injured
The Flyers played most of Wednesday’s game without top-line winger Owen Tippett.
Tippett took a nasty hit (no penalty) from Devils’ defenseman Brenden Dillon early in the second period. He went straight down the tunnel after the whistle blew and never returned to the game.
This will be something to keep an eye on, as the Flyers still have Ryan Poehling on the IR; Tippett could be joining him soon if his absence is any indication.
No Help for the Goalies
Starting goaltender Sam Ersson was pulled in the second period after the Devils’ fourth score–Ersson can’t eat all of the blame.
Sure, you’d like to see your goaltender make some stops, but Ersson was all night. The Flyers gave up many odd-man rushes Wednesday night, and the Devils made the most of their chances. Ersson made some unbelievable stops, but he could not stop them all.
After a great night on the penalty kill on Monday, the Flyers’ PK unit fell victim to the Devils’ fantastic power play. When the Flyers are already down a man, they need to help out their goalie and limit the amount of high-danger chances. That did not happen Wednesday night.
No-Discipline Second Period
The Devils’ four goals weren’t the only surprisingly large number to come out of the second period.
There were 13 (11 when doub;e-minors are considered) different minor penalties in the second period of Wednesday’s game alone. 13! For reference, there were 10 penalties combined in the first two meetings between the teams.
Any time you play a team twice back-to-back, let alone three times in 11 days, tensions will undoubtedly be high. Eight of the 13 penalties were roughing. If there was one thing this game did not lack, it was penalties.
There were two penalties in the first period and just one in the third.
What’s Next for the Flyers
The Flyers will return home to host the New York Islanders on Thursday at the Wells Fargo Center as Philly’s Metro madness continues. Puck drop is at 7:30 p.m. EST.
Wonder if Olle L. gets the call for Tippett. Assume he will be out for a few games minimum.
I heard a rumor (and I take it with a grain of salt) they could be looking D as the next call up. It is worth noting that Poehling could return to, and Abols is still up with the club. It would likley be Laughts moving back to the wing and Abols drawing in as the 4C. If I had to guess anyway.
I’m a little disappointed in Keith Jones. I was hoping he would honor the brand and the old legacy we have lost. The Flyers continue to play without an enforcer and suffer the disrespect. No enforcers in Lehigh or the prospect pool. Fighting is still a part of the game and cheap shots are still prevalent. The Flyers always seem outgunned which make it harder to play. He should be an expert on team makeup.
Danny B has said prior to Michkov starting the season with the team…Nic Deslauriers would be his best friend……what happened to that friendship! Is Nic still hurt going into the third month now.
