In the middle of Thursday’s game against the New York Islanders, news broke that the Philadelphia Flyers have acquired forward Andrei Kuzmenko and Jakob Pelletier from the Calgary Flames in return for Joel Farabee and Morgan Frost. Elliote Friedman broke the initial return, Frank Seravalli also reported details.

The soon-to-be 29-year-old Russian forward Kuzmenko has four goals and 11 assists for 15 points in 37 games played for Calgary this season. He is a pending unrestricted free agent and has a $5.5 million cap hit this season.

Kuzmenko was a former teammate of Matvei Michkov in the KHL. The two spent the 2021/22 season together with SKA St. Petersburg.

The Russian forward tallied 71 points in his rookie campaign (2022/23) with Vancouver and 46 points last season split between the Canucks (21TP) and Flames (25TP). Kuzmenko has not been the same player this season as in the past.

The 23-year-old Jakob Pelletier is also headed to Philly in its trade with Calgary. In 23 games, Pelletier has scored four goals and seven assists for the Flames.

Two draft picks, a 2025 second-round pick and a 2028 seventh-rounder, are headed back to Philly.

The Flames get Farabee and Frost

In return for their trade package, the Calgary Flames received forwards Joel Farabee and Morgan Frost from Philadelphia.

Both players have had their names circling in trade rumors for a good part of the season, with a change of scenery possibly benefitting both players. Now, both Frost and Farabee will get their fresh start in Calgary.

Frost, who had primarily been the Flyer 1C this season, has 11 goals and 14 assists for 25 points. He is soon to be 26 years old and a pending restricted free agent. Frost is one player whose role with the Flyers beyond this season was questionable–assuming a true 1C player makes his way to Philly.

Farabee’s name was a bit of a shock to see. At just 25 years old (will be 26 2/25), Farabee was in the middle of his sixth season with the Flyers. This year, he has tallied eight goals and 11 assists (19TP) in 49 games. He is coming off his best career season in 2023/24, as he scored 22 goals and had 28 assists for 50 total points.

Farabee has three years remaining on his contract with a cap hit of $5 million.

See ya boys. Won’t be missed. Both overrated.

Especially Farabee he was more concerned turning everyone gay then putting pucks in the net!

Not Offsides

I’ll take this trade. The two we gave up weren’t doing much. Kuzmenko has ability to put points up and could be a great linemate for Michkov, if Torts lets them play offense. He’ll be a UFA, so we can decide if we want to re-sign him. Plus, we dump Farabee’s salary without retaining any and acquire another higher draft pick.

Romus

Kuzmenko is gone in four months on his expiring contract…Pelletier will get a lower resigned salary as a RFA…….and with more cap space, Mikko Rantanen could now be on the radar.

Seven picks in the first two rounds…plenty to restock the cupboard.

FlyersWay

Kuzmenko could be flipped again at the deadline. We have one more slot available to retain a salary. Retain 50% and could potentially get a mid-round draft pick.

Romus

Kuz’s remaining contract has $1.8M left on it…he already has been paid for 4 months of work….so should be easy to move him if they want. IMO, Risto may be on the move soon.

Kameron Heath

Good riddance.
Cam York’s bags should be at the door next followed by the scouting staff responsible for these horrible drafts.

FlyGuys

Two underachieving former first round draft picks.
