5-2 Final Flyers vs Sens

The Philadelphia Flyers drop their fifth straight game Tuesday night, falling 4-2 to the Ottawa Senators. The Flyers are now 0-5 for their seven-game homestand–winless with just two games left.

With the loss, the Flyers’ record dropped to 27-31-8. They now have games against the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Carolina Hurricanes remaining during the homestand.

Tkachuk Scores Early

Who else other than Brady Tkachuk (27) to start the game’s scoring

The Senators’ captain started the scoring in the game early, just 24 seconds in. To make it make even more sense, former Flyers’ captain Claude Grioux (29) earned the primary assist on the goal.

Aside from that, both teams played sloppy hockey. Neither team generated many dangerous chances. Each side had a chance on the power play, but again, neither was successful in any way.

The two sides combined for 11 shots on goal (OTT 6, PHI 5), a number each team would surpass in the second period.

A Four-Goal Second

The offensive play was much better in the second period.

Jamie Drysdale (5) got the Flyers on the board with a beautiful back-hander that squeaked past Senators’ goaltender Anton Forsberg. The Flyers briefly tied the game back up at one, but it would not take long for Ottawa to regain the lead.

Just over a minute after the Drysdale score, Tyler Kleven (3) scored a goal from the blueline after an extremely impressive effort to keep the puck in the offensive zone for the Senators.

Rodrigo Abols (2) would be the next to score after cashing in on a great pass from Cam York (10). The Flyers would keep the game tied at two for a little, but a Michael Amadio (8) goal with 4:59 left in the second period would give the Senators a 3-2 lead heading into the second intermission.

Big Mistake Leads to the Dagger

The Flyers were playing with a lot of spark in the third period.

They could smell the comeback and their first win of the homestand. They were playing extremely well and generating great chances, but they could not come away with a score.

Despite not finding a goal, they were generating momentum, but a critical mistake led to the dagger.

Nick Seeler tried passing the puck to Ryan Poehling. Poehling could not control the puck, leading to a Dylan Cozens (13) goal off the turnover. The Flyers would eventually empty the net to try and spark a late-game comeback, but Shane Pinto (15) scored on the empty net to bring the game to its 5-2 final.

What’s Next for the Flyers

The Flyers will play again on Thursday when they host the Tampa Bay Lightning at the Wells Fargo Center.

What makes this stretch worse is that the teams the flyers have to jump over to be in a playoff position aren’t doing much better.I have certainly had my fill of losing, but at this point of the season I would rather see them lose to improve their draft position. That might lead to players who play at both ends of the ice, players who shoot the puck on the power play, and goalies who are consistent and can not just make the spectacular saves but the routine ones as well.Tampa bay and Carolina certainly will not feel sorry for the flyers, the last two opponents on the home stand.

GMAN

Sixteen games left. Eight against playoff teams (2-6) eight against non playoff teams (4-4)
6-10 would probably be best record they could hope for. Hopefully this will drop them to 5 or 6 seed. Need Seattle and Pittsburgh and even Anaheim to win.

Right now 6.5% chance at the first pick
