PhHN Daily: Flyers Recall a Goalie, Ink Prospect to ELC & More

The Philadelphia Flyers had quite the eventful night on Tuesday. Cam York was benched, and the Flyers seemingly vanished off the face of the earth. They were humiliated by the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The eventful night does not stop there. Head coach John Tortorella dropped quite a quote postgame.

On Wednesday’s edition of the Philly Hockey Now daily, we go over a recent Flyers recall, a possible offseason target coming off the board, an updated pick-watch, and a prospect inking his ELC.

Aleskei Kolosov Back With the Flyers

Goaltender Aleksi Kolosov was recalled ahead of Tuesday’s matchup with the Toronto Maple Leafs. However, he did not dress.

The recall is undoubtedly related to Ivan Fedotov’s poor play. Kolosov is likely to take over that No. 2 role for the remainder of the season.

For those keeping track, the recall of Kolosov is the fourth and final post-deadline recall the Flyers can make. So, unless two goalies become injured at once, or the Flyers are unable to dress 18 skaters, the Flyers will not be able to call up any more players. Instead, they can basically only bring up players/prospects who have yet to sign their entry-level contract.

There is no more roster limit, so there was no corresponding move. The only post-deadline NHL roster restriction is remaining under the salary cap.

The Flyers’ use of that last call-up on Kolosov indicates to me that they intend to play him in Fedotov’s role going forward.

Aleksei Kolosov with LHV This Season: 12 games, 3.11 GAA, .884 SV%, 5-6-1.

Flyers Sign Ty Murchison to ELC

The Philadelphia Flyers signed 2021 5th-round draft pick Ty Murchison to his entry-level contract on Wednesday. The contract begins in 2025/26.

Muchison, from Corona, California, attended Arizona State, where he played four seasons for the Sun Devils. He also wore the “A” in his Senior campaign. This year, he won the NCHC Defensive Defenseman Award, given to, you guessed it, the conference’s best defensive defenseman.

In four seasons, Murchison has 29 total points (9G, 20A) in 145 games. He has a career NCAA rating of +17.

Murchison will likely be a project. I do not expect him to be a Flyer next year. He is a left-shot defenseman who is 6’2″and 205 pounds. He is a shot-blocking monster who plays a physical game.

He’ll be a Phantom next season and will be given an opportunity to develop. He certainly has that combination of size and physicality that the Flyers lack. If he can develop his all-around game in Lehigh, he might be able to see the Flyers. Think diet Nick Seeler.

Jakob Chychrun Gets PAID

The Washington Capitals have locked up defenseman Jakob Chychrun on an eight-year, $72 million deal with an AAV of $9 million.

With the Flyers having many holes to fill this offseason, the star left-shot defenseman could have been a great addition. Not to mention his ties to the Flyers organization. Chychrun’s dad, Jeff, played five seasons in Philadelphia.

While nothing serious ever occurred from the smoke, it had been rumored that the Flyers had been interested in the young Chychrun in the past. The fit may have been there, but all thoughts of a possible reunion between the organization and the Chychrun family can be put aside.

Jakob Chychrun has been a big part of the Capitals’ success this season, and his big-time payday is well deserved.

Jakob Chychrun This Season: 18 goals, 26 assists, 44 total points, +24 in 66 games played this season.

Pick Watch

If you are keeping tabs on the Flyers’ position in the standings to see how they will fare in the draft lottery, Tuesday was a good night.

Philly was embarrassed by Toronto. Both Nashville and Buffalo picked up regulation wins Tuesday night, significantly helping out Philly. That pulls the Flyers within one point of catching the Sabres and three points ahead of the Predators. They have played three more games than the Sabres and two more than the Predators.

It does not just stop there. Philly was able to get some separation from the Seattle Kraken, who picked up a point in an overtime loss to the Calgary Flames.

The Flyers are gaining ground on the teams ahead of them and creating separation with the teams behind them.
