Flyers Explode for Seven Goals, Beat Sabres 7-4 on Saturday

on

In their second game of the Brad Shaw era, the Philadelphia Flyers had their second straight offensive explosion. After scoring six goals against Montreal on Thursday, Philadelphia went off in a 7-4 win over the Buffalo Sabres.

Matvei Michkov scored twice for the Flyers. Owen Tippett and Ryan Poehling each scored on the power play, and Noah Cates, Tyson Foerster and Jakob Pelletier all scored for the Flyers as well.

With the win, the Flyers now have the fifth-worst points percentage in the league, with the Sabres sliding back below at fourth.

The Flyers’ record improved to 30-36-9 with the win.

Michkov Strikes First, Again

For the second time in the two-game post-Torts era in Philadelphia, Matvei Michkov (23) lit the lamp for the first time in the game.

The Flyers’ rookie has been on a tear lately. His goal marked the fifth straight game with a point, and he has eight points in that span. Five consecutive games with a point ties his season/career high longest point streak.

It did not take long for the Flyers to tack on another score. 29 seconds after Michkov’s goal, Jakob Pelletier (5) would score his first goal as a Flyer off a great feed from Owen Tippett (19). Pelletier has been finding his groove with the Flyers. Since being moved up to the third line, Pelletier has looked like a completely different player.

Jack Quinn (12) would get the Sabres on the board just under a minute after the halfway mark. Not much would come from the rest of the period, as the game went into the first break with a 2-1 score.

Sabres Score Twice in the Second, the Flyers Answered

The second period would open with a quick JJ Peterka (23) goal, not even two minutes into the period. The game was quickly tied at two apiece in the second.

Quinn (13) would score his second of the game, this time on the power play. The Sabres had their first lead of the game with a little more than half of the game remaining.

Their lead, however, would not last long.

Michkov (24) netted his second goal of the game, his fourth goal in the last two games, and his ninth point in the last five games. The score also brought him to a tie with Lane Hutson for the NHL Rookie lead in points. His second goal would tie the game.

The Flyers were not done.

Noah Cates (15) scored his first goal since March 4th, and gave the Flyers the lead right back. It was their second lead of the game.

Extending the Lead

The Flyers entered the third period up by one score. Owen Tippett (20) would extend their lead to two with his power-play goal. Tippett unleashed a missile from the top of the left-side faceoff circle. The goal marked the Flyers’ second power-play goal in as many games.

Now up 5-3, the Flyers were beginning to get a little more comfortable. Tyson Foerster would give even more cushion.

Foerster (18) unleashed a big-time shot from the high-slot and put Philly up 6-3 with just less than 10 minutes remaining in the game.

The Flyers went on the power play, but Alex Tuch (29) scored first, bringing Buffalo back within striking distance with the 6-4 score.

However, I did say scoring first. Ryan Poehling (9) would quickly answer the short-handed goal with a power-play goal of his own. The score would become 7-4, which was the game’s final.

What’s Next for the Flyers

The Flyers will play again on Monday when they host the Nashville Predators at the Wells Fargo Center.

They lose, they are 4th, one point behind Buffalo who has three games in hand. But, they win, leapfrog Seattle (68) and are now in a 6-7-8 tie with Pittsburgh and Boston at 69. Three points behind Anaheim at 72, who luckily have 3 games in hand. They need to stop this winning. Luckily 5/7 games are against teams fighting for the playoffs. There is such a potential difference between picking at 4 and picking at 8. But being free of the shackles from Torts will light a fire under them and they’ll screw themselves out of a possible great pick at 4/5 and settle for 7/8.

That prediction has to become true for them to possibly get the #4 pick. Luckily Buffalo and Pittsburgh both won today. The rest of the way, Boston has 5 versus playoff teams and 3 versus non. Pitt has 4/3, but the Kraken have 6/2 and Buffalo has 7/2. The Kraken is the team we really need to root for.
