The Philadelphia Flyers have officially signed center Karsen Dorwart to a two-year entry-level contract on Saturday. He’ll report to the Flyers.

The center from Sherwood, Oregon, has spent the last three seasons at Michigan State, wearing the “A” for the Spartans the past two seasons.

Dorwart was regarded as one of the top NCAA free agents available.

He was initially linked to the Flyers about a week ago, with Elliote Friedman putting the pieces together.

In three regular seasons with the Spartans, Dorwart tallied 92 points, 38 goals, and 54 assists. His best career season at Michigan State came in 2023/24, when he tallied 34 points (15G, 19A) in 38 games, per Elite Prospects.

This year, Dorwart had 31 points in 35 games and was second in points to Isaac Howard (51, TBL) on a talented Michigan State team.

Cornell shocked the NCAA hockey world, eliminating the Spartans from the tournament. Despite the loss, Howard lit the lamp in his final game in the green and white.

What Kind of Player is Dorwart

Karsen Dorwart is a physical center. He is 6’1″, 195 pounds. He uses his size to get into scrums and win puck battles, and is not afraid to throw some hits.

While he does play well at both ends of the ice, Dorwart is primarily a threat in the offensive zone. He is not a Noah Cates-like 200-foot player, but he certainly is not a defensive liability. You could call him a less-explosive Ryan Poehling.

In my opinion, Dorwart has middle-six potential. He has a solid shot and can be a playmaker at times. He is not going to be a game changer, but he undoubtedly has potential. Dorwart will likely be a bottom-six guy, likely 4C with the Flyers this season–the potential is there, however.

With the addition, the Flyers add a prospect at a much-needed position with Dorwart.

My concern on all the glowing scouting reports…he was a 22-year old playing in the Big Ten vs many 21-year old and younger players.

Agree….may go straight to the team and play perhaps Monday vs the Preds, though that may be a little too fast, my guess he will suit up April 5th vs the Canadians in Montreal.
