Flyers Mock Draft 1.0: Round One

In honor of Thursday being round one of the 2025 NFL Draft, I thought it would be a good time to release my first Flyers mock draft.
For this Flyers mock draft, we’re making a few assumptions. The first being that one team jumps the Flyers in the lottery, and they end up with the No. 5-overall draft selection, the second assumption is that the Oilers and Avalanche picks end up at No. 24 and 25, and the third and final assumption is that the Flyers make all three of their first-round selections.
Flyers GM Daniel Briere has some interesting decisions to make. With a surplus of draft compensation, a move up in the draft order is entirely possible. They could even trade the picks for players on draft day. However, for the purpose of this mock draft, the Flyers will be making each of their selections.

Round One, Pick No. 5: James Hagens, C, Boston College (NCAA)
James Hagens sitting there at No. 5 would seem like a dream come true, so first, I’ll give my rationale as to why I think he’ll be available there.
The primary reason: I don’t buy this Porter Martone dip. To me, the top three are still Matthew Schaefer, Michael Misa, and Martone. My second reason for Hagens being available at five: I believe the Anton Frondell hype is real, and he will be the second center off the board.
That would make Hagens available at No. 5; a perfect storm for the Philadelphia Flyers.
Hagens was at one point considered to be the surefire No. 1 overall pick, but did not reach the high expectations set on him at Boston College this season. The funny part? He was still a point-per-game player. In 37 games, Hagens had 11 goals and 26 assists for 37 points, and a rating of +21.
Hagens is a fast skater with fantastic vision, great playmaking ability, and can score. He is also a fairly well-rounded player–he won’t be a defensive liability.
The pure combination of skill that Hagens possesses will make him a lethal center to play with Matvei Michkov for years to come. Just watch the way Hagens set up his teammates at BC. He’ll open up a whole new world for Michkov.
Hagens is the perfect first pick for the Flyers, and they’ll make it happen. Also, for what it’s worth, Hagens is my pick if the Flyers are at No. 4 as well.

Round One, Pick No. 24: Jack Murtagh, C/LW, USNTDP (Boston U. Commit)
The Flyers double down on the center position with Jack Murtagh with their second pick in my Flyers mock draft.
After securing Hagens with its first pick, I can see Philadelphia looking for two things with its second first-round selection. The first being size, and the second being a bit more experience with versatility.
To me, picking another center is the smart move considering the depth down the middle in the pipeline. Adding Hagens alongside Jett Luchanko, the Flyers might be alright at center. If that is the case, then picking a prospect with experience on the wing is also essential. Murtagh checks that box.
He is also a bit bigger than Hagens, who is 5’11” and 176 lbs. Murtagh comes in at 6’1″ and 198 lbs, offering a bit more size.
Murtagh spent the last season with the USNTDP, where he accumulated 20 goals and 26 assists for 46 points in 47 games.
Murtagh will head to Boston University next season, assuming he does not turn professional right away. That will only help his development moving forward.
To me, Murtagh and Hagens share similar traits. He is a quick skater who uses his speed to create offense, is smart with the puck, and is great at setting up his teammates, but can also score on his own.
Murtagh can be a steal for the Flyers in the mid-20s.
Round One, Pick No. 25: Sascha Boumedienne, LD, Boston University (NCAA)
If the Flyers end up spending all three firsts on prospects, then one can assume that if they take two forwards/centers, they will surely use one of their other picks on a defenseman.
That is why my third pick in my Flyers mock draft is Sascha Boumedienne, a Swedish defenseman playing at Boston University.
Assuming the Flyers do not try and move up for Radim Mrtka, Logan Hensler, or Kashawn Aitcheson, that would leave Boumedienne and Blake Fiddler as the two late-first-round options at defenseman. The Flyers need size at the blueline, which would actually make me lean Fiddler. However, since Fiddler is a right-shot D-man, Boumedienne just makes more sense.
The Swedish blueliner is 6’2″ and 183 lbs. He thrives on the power play but has an overall sound offensive game. In 40 games at BU this season, Boumedienne tallied three goals and 13 assists for 16 points.
I’ll be honest, this pick may not be an option if Boumedienne continues his tear at the U18 World Junior Championships. In one game (granted, it was vs. SUI), Boumedienne tallied one goal and five assists for six total points.
There are undoubtedly other options for defense. A trade-up would not shock me, as well as a trade-back later into the first or even the second. However, if the Flyers stand pat, I believe the right pick is Boumedienne.

Sascha Boummedienne goes to BU, not BC
Agree with the first two scenarios…..Hagens and Murtagh…however think Sascha B. may not be there past 20, …..so I would go with Kurban Limatov out of Russia….where he can play in the KHL for a few years….or maybe even Haoxi Wang out of the OHL…Flyers seem to like to gamble a bit.
I follow the logic here. But I would love to draft josh ravensberger if he’s still available in the late 20’s, or even trade up to get him. I know the flyers have a stable of amateur goalies, but he would absolutely be at the top of the list
Could still be there in the mid-30s…Flyers own second or Ducks second round pick..
Let’s hope those picks are higher couldn’t they be in the top 20 if Avs and oilers both lose in round1
Potentially, yes. I think the Avs lose and the Oilers hang on, though. I think both end up lower teens ahead of the leser Eastern teams, though, so maybe 19-21 if both lose. (I haven’t done the math; so, just a guess).
Gotta build from thee goalie out. Look at Edmonton. All that talent and they are down 2-0 because of defense and goaltending. Look at the flyers with lindros. Never had solid goaltending or defense.
If I had to take a guess, goaltending will be addressed in one way or another this offseason.
I’m sure hoping this is wrong. Hagen will not be a center at the NHL level. We do also need a top line left winger, but I want to make sure we get a center. I go Desnoyers all day before Hagen. I’m terrified of the NCAA pick and would avoid that like the plague. Dropping to #5 complicates things but wouldn’t be surprised. If Desnoyers isn’t there, I go Jake O’Brien. Barring that, I trade back a couple and take McQueen. I let someone else risk the NCAA player.
