Worst Case Scenario: Flyers Get their Draft Pick

Published

on

Monday was not the best day for the Philadelphia Flyers.

At the conclusion of the 2025 NHL Draft Lottery, the Flyers were given the Sixth overall pick in the upcoming NHL Draft.

No. 6 was a doomsday scenario for the Flyers–the worst possible outcome.

The New York Islanders won the NHL Draft Lottery and will pick first. The Utah Hockey Club won the second drawing and will pick in the No. 4 overall spot. San Jose will select second, Chicago third, and Nashville fifth.

Here is the official order of the lottery teams:

  1. New York Islanders
  2. San Jose Sharks
  3. Chicago Blackhawks
  4. Utah Hockey Club
  5. Nashville Predators
  6. Philadelphia Flyers
  7. Boston Bruins
  8. Seattle Kraken
  9. Buffalo Sabres
  10. Anaheim Ducks
  11. Pittsburgh Penguins
  12. New York Rangers
  13. Detroit Red Wings
  14. Columbus Blue Jackets
  15. Vancouver Canucks
  16. Montreal Canadiens (Via Calgary Flames)

After nobody moved up in the 2024 NHL Draft, two longshots won this year’s lottery.

It Could Be Worse for the Flyers

Despite the lottery bringing the actual worst-case scenario, it could always be worse.

If the Flyers had won their final game of the season, they would have been seventh in the pre-lottery standings, where the Buffalo Sabres were. The results of the 2025 letter put the Sabres at the No. 9 overall pick, so that disaster was avoided for Philadelphia.

It is also worth noting that the Flyers have plenty of draft capital. If they want to move up in the draft, they will be able to. The Sharks could be a team willing to move back, especially considering the young centers they already have. Not to mention, a move back could make it more comfortable for them to reunite the Eklund brothers.

However, for now, Philadelphia will be selecting at the No. 6 overall spot.

This should not surprise flyers fans at all, with the results of the lottery, now trader Danny is on the clock if you will to help come up with a draft strategy between now and June 27th

GMAN

Looking at the point values of each pick, here is what it would take just using draft picks to move up.
To get #2 from San Jose 726 points, it would take #6, #24 (Avs), #40 (Ana) 732 points.
To get #3 from Chicago 602 points, it would take #6, #25 (Edm), 631 points.
To get #4 from Utah 531 points, it would take #6, #40 (Ana) 542 points.

All of these scenarios the Flyers would still have their top 2nd round pick @36.

I personally would try to pull the trigger with San Jose for Misa, or with Utah for Hagens.

Romus

The 6th and 24th could get the Hawks to budge

Yes it sucks but who knows with nhl GMs maybe Utah wants some size and takes Mrtka or a GM likes what he saw from Martin at the U 18s and takes him and hagens or frondell slips back happens a lot . I know trades and very rare in the top 10 but you never know. All it could take is a team or 2 to love a player and another slips back . Now we will see what DB can do . Let’s just hope oilers lose and panthers and Carolina win and those other firsts move up a few spots.

Not Offsides

The lowest the Flyers could have moved down to was #6. Where did they end up? #6, of course. I’m sick of this league. Now we’re out of the top five, after which there is a considerable drop-off in player ratings. Chicago moves up to #3, after #2 last year and #1 the year before. And Utah, in one of the beloved “new” hockey markets, jumps all the way up to #4. All this after Michkov, third in rookie points and first in rookie goals, is absolutely snubbed with no nomination for Rookie of the Year. The Anti-Flyers Bias is sickening.

B. C.

Amen !

GMAN

Chicago didn’t move up to #3, they dropped to #3 since they started at #2. The Isles moved up from #9 to #1 and Utah jumped from #14 to #4. Everyone else dropped 2 spots that were above the Isles and dropped one spot that were originally between the Isles and Utah.

If you’re going to blame someone about Michkov, blame Torts, not the league. As soon as the reins were removed, he blossomed a bit under Shaw and we got a glimpse of his potential. Individual accolades are nice, but the long game is Lord Stanley.

Romus

After the Cup is decided…..draft picks become like gold to GMs…..Danny should do a Howie and trade the 6th and Avs-24th- to move up…possibly to three or four.

Paul

Stop dreaming. No one in the top 10 is moving back.

That whole ping pong ball thing was a joke. How about next year they just do a few rounds of Three Card Monty?
