PhHN Daily: Xfinity, Flyers Taking Their Time, & the Utah Mammoth

It is May 7th, and the Philadelphia Flyers do not seem much closer to finding their next head coach. Just like the Flyers, their home arena will be making some changes ahead of the 2025/26 season.
The Utah Hockey Club got its new name, and two more Round 2 games got underway.
On today’s Philly Hockey Now Daily, we discuss the Flyers’ new arena name, their coaching search, Utah’s new name, and the two games from last night.

Introducing… Xfinity Mobile Arena
The home of the Philadelphia Flyers will have a new name. Starting on September 1st, the Wells Fargo Center will be “Xfinity Mobile Arena”.
The agreement on the naming rights will last until the completion of the 2030-2031 season. That is expected to be the last season in the arena. Both the Sixers and Flyers are set to move to a new venue in the same South Philadelphia Complex.
The arena had been called the Wells Fargo Center since 2010. The name change will be the fifth new name for the home of the Philadelphia Flyers and 76ers.
Flyers Taking their Time
Reports surfaced Wednesday morning regarding updates to the Flyers’ coaching search. Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic reported that Philly is in “no rush” but that things should “heat up” in the next week or so.
LeBrun also briefly updated a few of the Flyers’ leading candidates, including Rick Tocchet and Brad Shaw, to help give an idea of where things stand.
Kevin Kurz, also of The Athletic, reported that the Flyers are making progress, but they are still taking their time in the head coaching search.
Only one of the NHL’s coaching vacancies has been filled (Sullivan to Rangers), so I genuinely do not expect the Flyers to be in any sort of panic.

Utah Has a Name
After one season as the Utah Hockey Club, the team in Utah finally has its name.
The team is now called the Utah Mammoth. This one was clearly a favorite, and in all honesty, seems relatively expected. Now, the club officially has its name. At first, their logo looked like an EASHL team logo from the NHL video game.
However, some smaller details in the logo make up for it. My favorite feature is the outline of the state of Utah on the upper left of the logo. The bottom of the outline is taken up by a mountain range, which just so happens to be in the shape of an M.
I am also quite content with the uniforms. I was a big fan of their initial sweater, so it’s nice to see that not much has really changed. The white sweater is virtually the same, except the outline logo was replaced with the Mammoth logo.
The black sweater remains the same, aside from the obvious change–the Mammoth logo sits on the chest instead of the diagonal “UTAH”.
Overall, the team’s branding is pretty sweet.

Playoff Update
Two more Round 2 Series got underway on Tuesday.
The first game was between the Washington Capitals and the Carolina Hurricanes. Aliaksei Protas scored the game’s first goal for the Capitals early in the second period, only for the Hurricanes to tie the game with a Logan Stankoven goal with just a touch over half of the third period remaining.
The game would go to overtime, and Jaccob Slavin would quickly end it for Carolina, giving the Hurricanes the 1-0 series lead.
Out west, the Round 2 series between the Edmonton Oilers and Vegas Golden Knights got started.
Vegas got out to a hot start after Mark Stone scored twice within the first 10 minutes of the game. Corey Perry brought the game within one before the first period ended, and Leon Draisaitl tied it less than a minute into the third period.
Zack Hyman and Connor Brown each scored in the final four minutes of the game, as four unanswered goals helped lift the Oilers over the Knights in Game 1.
Vegas Hockey Now’s Hannah Kirkell shares her 7 Observations from the Golden Knights’ blown multi-goal lead loss.
