Philadelphia Flyers star Matvei Michkov was involved in a single-car accident while on vacation in Dubai. Michkov rented the vehicle but was not the driver. Alexy Shevchenko from Sport-Express first reported this.

Multiple reports confirm that the Philadelphia Flyers organization is aware of the incident and that Michkov came away from it unharmed. At first, it may have seemed like a car accident involving a rental car. It has now become much deeper than that.

A Match TV report came out Wednesday morning saying that Michkov and his friend had their passports illegally taken by the rental car company. There was also a report that Michkov was extorted for $100,000 so that information would not be given to the media.

Michkov Has a Lawyer Release a Statement

Since he had his passport taken, Michkov had to hire a local lawyer, Shouk Al Kathiri. Al Kathiri issued a statement to Match TV.

“Michkov was in the passenger seat, and the driver was in a sober state. No alcohol test was taken from Matvei, and he had not drunk anything either. From the point of view of the UAE laws, there are no questions to him. He has not committed any kind of offense on the territory of the Emirates,” the statement reads.

The statement also confirms that Michkov and his friend have had their passports taken. It also confirms that the Flyers star is being extorted for a large sum of cash.

“The owners of the car rental service illegally hold the passports of two citizens of the Russian Federation. And this is a crime under the laws of the UAE. Moreover, the owners of the service extorted about 100 thousand dollars from Matvei so that information about him would not be disseminated in the media. There is evidence in the form of screenshots of correspondence sent to Matvei by the owner of the car rental company. There is also testimony from witnesses who have already confirmed this.”

The report says that the people in charge of the rental company can be prosecuted for extortion, blackmail, and money laundering (due to incorrectly registering the lease).

The statement also confirms that law enforcement has proven that the rumors swirling on social media were false. Rumors had involved gambling, alcohol, and prostitution with the accident.

With lawyers involved, it looks like there will be a resolution soon.

Matvei, the Jersey Shore isn’t all that bad, you know.
