ICYMI: Flyers Extend Their Second RFA

The Philadelphia Flyers continue their somewhat busy early offseason as they locked up their second RFA on Tuesday.

Noah Cates signed a four-year, $16 million deal with an AAV of $4 million. The Flyers’ center was a fantastic story in 2024/25. Cates started the season as a healthy scratch and finished the season as the team’s top-line center.

While Cates’ breakout is not reflected in the statsheet, his defensive abilities were on display all season, proving his worth to the team.

The Flyers now have locked up a fantastic two-way center likely through his prime, on a relatively team-friendly deal. Two-way centers are hard to find, so this was a big deal for the Flyers.

Roger McQueen Back to 100%; Should the Flyers Be Interested?

In a recent interview with NHL.com’s Adam Kimelman, NHL Draft prospect Roger McQueen said that he is back to 100%.

McQueen has been dealing with back issues for the past three seasons. He missed five months this past season due to a lower-back fracture.

In the interview, McQueen revealed that his initial injury was actually misdiagnosed as a bulging disc injury, one that he played through. It was not until this season that McQueen was properly diagnosed and treated for a fracture.

Now, McQueen is feeling healthy and will participate in the fitness testing at the NHL Draft Combine in Buffalo.

“One to 10, I’m at a 10, pain-free now, and there’s no symptoms for the last while,” McQueen told NHL.com.

If McQueen remains problem-free throughout the draft process, you have to imagine he will be high on the Flyers’ draft board come June 27th. The 6’5″ center would check a lot of boxes for the Flyers.

Now that he’s healthy, I would add McQueen to the tier of James Hagens, Anton Frondell, Porter Martone, and Caleb Desnoyers. It will truly be hard for the Flyers to mess up the No. 6 overall pick.

National Hockey Now

New Jersey Hockey Now: It is going to be a busy offseason for a Flyers Metro Division rival. The New Jersey Devils have lots to answer for after their first-round exit. James Nichols answers reader questions in his latest mailbag. He discusses the possibility of adding a 100+ point-scorer to an already offensively talented team, the futures of two young defensemen, and much more.

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Another Flyers’ rival has some big choices to make. The Pittsburgh Penguins have several decisions to make, including who their next head coach will be. Dan Kingerski talks 5 Pivotal Penguins Decisions and Deadlines for June, as the month will prove critical for the franchise.

Vegas Hockey Now: Two Golden Knights made Nick Kypreos’ Trade Board 1.0. A defenseman and a forward from Vegas each found themselves on the list, and Hannah Kirkell breaks down why they made the list. Could the Flyers be a fit for either?

NHL Trade Talk & News

TSN: Speaking of the Kypreos trade board, a shocking name was on the list. Kypreos lists Martin Necas as a player to keep an eye on as a possible trade candidate. The rationale? Kypreos indicated that Necas was not “overly thrilled” about his time in Colorado and may want to explore other options. If they can’t get an extension done, he could be on his way out.

Daily Faceoff: Marty Necas is not the biggest name that could be traded this offseason. Rumors began swirling that Jason Robertson could be on the way out. The Stars are in cap purgatory, and have MANY contracts to hand out. On the latest “The Sheet Blog”, Jeff Marek explains why Robertson could be trade bait for the Stars.

Pagnotta: The Utah Mammoth could look to be bold in its first offseason with the new branding. Dave Pagnotta of The Fourth Period reports that the Mammoth could look to move the No. 4 pick in the draft for a young, top-six forward.

I wonder if the Flyers could try to trade up from No. 6 to No. 4?

Marner Watch: Teams (excluding Toronto) I have seen linked to Mitch Marner in the last week (in order of frequency): Vegas, Carolina, Florida, Utah, Los Angeles, and Chicago (with no mention of the Flyers).

Bump, 6th and 32nd to Utah for the 4th?
Then comes down to Hagens or Frondell.

They want forwards and young nhl players they won’t want bump.forester would prob get it done but flyers aren’t trading all that for 2 spots when one of those guys could easily drop anyway. Now say tippett and 31.. would that get it done . He’s 26 so not that young but not old but young enough, they have some smaller skill guys so I think there looking to get bigger but who knows what they want. And again one of these guys can easily drop anyway.

joenardonesson

still too much

joenardonesson

why not just stay at 6? why give up that many assets when the player you draft at 4 might not be that much diff than the player you draft at 6. If they move up and give up serious assets than it needs to be for a top 2 pick.

Cochrane

Exactly!! Too risky.

That was McQueen talking to a podcast so what else is he going to say? He wants to get drafted high too. The flyers will see the facts when there doctors look at his medicals. Will would you draft him at 6 if he was 100 percent good? Or would you not like the fact that he is older for his draft class and missed basically a year of development this year. Does it even matter in the long run if he hits. I guess it would really depend who slips to 6th. Also what would you trade to move up to the 4th spot?

Cochrane

NOBODY with back problems!!!!!wtf?

Cochrane

Big NO to getting rossi!!! No more tiny weak players!!!!! We need guys who want to get dirty and dish out punishment! Watching the playoffs its clear that the flyers are no match physically for any of the top 12 teams
