NHL Draft
Final Flyers Combine Notes

The Philadelphia Flyers had themselves a busy week at the draft combine, but that’s expected. They have seven picks in the first 50 picks. What else were they going to do?
Lots of news and notes have come out from the combine, and it can be hard to follow. That said, let’s round up everything we’ve heard about what the Flyers did this past week in Buffalo.
Flyers Meetings
With eight picks in the top-70, the Flyers were plenty busy watching and meeting with the top-90 prospects attending the NHL Draft Combine in Buffalo.
Jackie Spiegel of the Philadelphia Inquirer was in Buffalo and gave us a list of players the Flyers met with.
The Flyers met with trade-up candidate Michael Misa, as well as No. 6 options James Hagens, Porter Martone, Caleb Desnoyers, Brady Martin, Roger McQueen, and Jake O’Brien. They also spoke with Viktor Eklund, Radim Mrtka, and Kashawn Aitcheson, who could be options at No. 6, but are likely trade-up options from the No. 22 pick. Philly also met with Justin Carbonneau, who won’t be considered at No. 6, but will likely be a trade-up from No. 22.
The Flyers also spoke with Logan Hensler, Malcom Spence, Sascha Boumedienne, Blake Fiddler, Shane Vansaghi, Cullen Potter, Josh Ravensbergen, Will Horcoff, and Carter Bear, who are all late-first-round options.
Lastly, they met with Vaclav Nestrasil, Carter Amico, and Haoxi Wang, and Henry Brzustewicz, who are all, in my opinion, second-round options.
One name missing from this list is Jackson Smith, who reportedly caught the Flyers’ eye at the combine, according to Russ Cohen. However, there were no reported meetings between the two sides.
Combine Dinners
In all honesty, combine dinners are not MUCH different than the meetings. Dinners offer the chance to get to know the player in a slightly less formal setting.
While players can meet with as many teams as are interested in them, it’s harder to dine with every team. I would not put too much stock into who dined with whom. However, to contradict myself here, by seeing who the Flyers dined with, you can get a smidge of an idea where they are headed.
For the Flyers, they took Porter Martone, Brady Martin, and Jake O’Brien to dinner.
The team is clearly focusing on forwards with their top pick, which is absolutely necessary.
Combine Winners?
Every year, there are winners and losers at the combine.
Caleb Desnoyers, in my opinion, was the biggest winner. Not only was he able to become one of the most loved personalities at the combine, but he also revealed he played last season with injuries in BOTH of his wrists. That’s right, he led the Q in points despite having two injured wrists. If he was going to before, I don’t see any world where he falls to No. 6 after the draft combine.
Brady Martin is also a big winner. Reports of interest in the player have been circulating for a while now. However, it seems intensified now, as Cam Robinson reports that Utah REALLY likes Martin. Reports were also circulating, suggesting that if you want Martin, he won’t get past Boston at No. 7, so a trade-up is necessary. Since the lottery, Martin went from a borderline second-round pick to now possibly going top-five. That could make Utah a trade-up option for the Flyers as well, if they want to secure their guy.
Will Horcoff, while not really improving his draft stock, had a great combine as well, showing off his physical abilities. Same goes for Shane Vansaghi. Both B1G forwards have floated in that 25-40 range. That won’t change much, but maybe they’re more likely first-rounders now.

Will you don’t think it hurt des at all that he didn’t participate in the tests and Anton frondell got #1 in VO2max. Idk if this affects but hagens is clocked in at 5”10-1/2 but up to 186, plus with the panthers doing what they do too. It’s sounds like they also meet with Cole Reschny and supposedly had a great meeting. Also had a great combine. Would be great at 22. Dinners could be a smoke screen too.
Dinners are often smoke screens! And I believe they met with Reschny, but I don’t want to write/report anything until the I think becomes I’m certain.
As for Desnoyers, I don’t think it hurt at all. He was already getting 1.03 looks before the injury report. To find out he was doing everything last season w two bad wrists makes his tape all the more impressive.
Yeah agreed, I wonder how long it was really going on for though. If any of him , Martin or Martone are pick top 5 could really help the flyers making hagens and frondell drop.
100% chance one of Schaefer, Misa, Hagens, Frondell, Martone, or Desnoyers drop to No. 6. That’s the way I look at it.
Yeah we are getting a great player regardless.
Still think DB could trade up to 4 or even 5. Do not see Schaefer or Misa falling beyond 2….but can see one of the other tier 2 guys falling. Would really like Frondell as the pick if Flyers remain at 6..
Hawks at three…is a mystery for what they wil do. Last year was defenseman, so assume it will be a forward this year….Martone on Bedard’s right side would seem to be a good pick and fit for them.
Would be great if Martin went 4 and Martone went 3 . They we can get 2 from tier to chose from. I don’t know how much it would take to move to 4 but if they like Martin and traded back , Martone went 3 we would have 3 guys to choose… but if utah reaches and we have two guys to chose from anyway mine as well not waste assets at 6. Don’t think Nashville is trading back, then can you the assets to move up into the teens and get someone we like there.
Martone is still my ideal pick, despite him not being a C. Too much power and skill.
Even over hagens , frondell and des. U think his skating will get a lot better? I’m still hagens, frondell with Martone close behind ( I’ll be happy with any of the 4 tier 2 guys though ). I know he played LW at worlds but he prob still going RW. I get it’s half and half frondell C or w. I agree flyers should be BPA but In my opinion I think upside for those 3 upsides are so close and in general C is such a coveted position for all of hockey that those two are a little up the list with a chance to stick at C.
That could happen if the Hawks like Desnoyers. Schaefer 1 Misa 2 Desnoyers 3 Martin 4 Hagens 5 Martone 6. Frondell 7
What’s your top 5 list for 6 excluding top 2. Mine is hagens , frondell , Martone, des. O’Brien , Eklund.
I actually just wrote a PhHN+ on it, don’t wanna give away too much of the secret 😂.
But Martone and Hagens are 1 and 2 for me.
I like that and yeah I’ll check it out thanks will. Awesome job btw with all of the work.. keep it up👍
I appreciate it!!!
Man as you get closer to the draft, so many rumors float out there and mock drafts and differing scouting reports….. for example saw where Desnoyers will not be on the board at 6…….Brady Martin is drawing more rave reviews, along with Jake O’Brien….which one, or even both, could go in the top 5.
Not sure all of this is just more smoke screens or not.
