The Philadelphia Flyers have acquired forward Trevor Zegras from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for C Ryan Poehling, the 45th overall pick in the 2025 NHL Draft, and a 2026 4th Round Pick.

Elliote Friedman broke the trade and was first on the return.

Zegras, 24, began his career with loads of potential before injuries derailed his promising career.

The young forward posted back-to-back 60+ point seasons in his first two full years in the league. The following two seasons have been plagued by a knee injury, surgery, and an ankle injury.

Health has been a struggle for Zegras.

The draft capital the Flyers coughed up is virtually nothing, given how much they have this draft. They traded their third-best second-rounder, as well as a future fourth-rounder.

Losing Poehling was the most significant loss, as he proved to be, more or less, a Noah Cates lite—a middle-six center who can play lockdown D and have scoring potential.

Now, a middle-six spot is open for Zegras, who can help the Flyers down the middle.

While he has primarily played on the wing since returning from injury, Zegras can still play down the middle, especially with how desperately the Flyers need the help.

Zegras is entering the final year of his contract, paying him $5.75 million. He will be a restricted free agent (RFA) after the next season.

Danny Briere and company have officially made their first trade of the offseason. Buckle up.

If the flyers made this trade for an oft injured player, then they should make every effort to get Roger McQueen in the draft, since he has had injury problems that would have made him a higher piçk.Losing poehling like you mentioned hurts because he did a lot of things that didn’t get him on the score sheet
Would you have made this trade if you were the gm William?

DB gave up a swiss army knife bottom six and two picks for a whole lotta potential with Zegras. Hopefully this is the first of many shoes to drop. Next up on the trade block is RFA York.

RP was expendable the moment Cates signed his deal. We didn’t need two players from the same mold. Cates has a better scoring touch. I like the fact Zegras is on the last year of his deal. If he’s looking to strike it big on his next deal, gonna have to show up this year, especially coming off two injury plagued seasons.

Here is hoping he is not related to ryan ellis, but at least they are not on the hook for a long contract.

Trap

Good trade for Briere didn’t have to give up a 1st rounder. Now if the flyers can make TZ a little tougher and improve on his FO %, things will be good.
