Flyers Extend Key RFA Defenseman

The Philadelphia Flyers have agreed to a five-year, $5.15 million AAV extension with RFA defenseman Cam York.

Elliote Freiedman was first on the news.

Flyers Extend Cam York

York was the last of the Flyers’ key restricted free agents without a contract. He was eligible to receive an offer sheet from another team, but did not.

Love him or hate him, York provides critical value to the Philadelphia Flyers’ defensive core. With the left side of the Flyers’ blueline being the weaker of the two, and having much worse depth, it was crucial that the Flyers re-signed the 24-year-old defender.

York eats top-line minutes. Barring any monumental moves this offseason, should be returning to the top pair alongside Travis Sanheim.

The left-shot defenseman was the Flyers’ 14th-overall selection in the 2019 NHL Draft.

He came into the league with high-end puck-moving potential. Since then, the University of Michigan product has become a steady defensive defenseman who has been an anchor for the Flyers’ blue line group.

It was a turbulent end to the year for the young defenseman. Between frustrations from the season and a rocky relationship with then-head coach John Tortorella, York did not have the smoothest season.

Now, with a new contract and Rick Tocchet at the helm, York will look for a bounce-back season.

With York’s extension in Philadelphia, the Flyers have officially re-signed all but one of their RFAs this season. Jakob Pelletier, who spent just about half of the year in Philadelphia and did not receive a qualifying offer, signed a three-year deal in Tampa Bay.

What do you think about the Flyers’ latest extension?

With cap escalating over the next few years, it is a team friendly contract….will be easier to move him him in four or five years if they desire. Contract runs thru his 30age season. Now want to see if he can pick up his game more and become more of an offensive threat. Having three similar smallish d-men like him, Andrae and Drysdale, they will need to toughen up facing larger forwards as the season wears on.

Absolutely spot on (though he could likely be moved easily prior to 4 or 5 years from now if desired)!

Okay with length with a good AAV. The contract could be traded because of the AAV. Future details are needed on the new package to see how both sides will fair.

I like this extension,as william said in the article he plays a lot of minutes, among other things. He seems to be one of those players that gets picked on if you will because of how high a draft pick he was.If you are watching games on tv as opposed to live games, you only see so much, you can’t see the play away from the puck.I am sure the coaching change will help him,as with a lot of other players who will not look over their shoulder everytime if they make a mistake to see whether they get benched or not.

What a waste of money. Looking at his injury record he spends alot of time off the ice. Everyone seems to forget that. Pluse he can have aditude problems. We should have signed him to a 2-3 year contract at 3 million not 5 years at 5 plus a year. He has not proven he’s worth that kind of money. When the front office decides to do stupid things like this someone should be there to slap the mess out of them to wake them up!!!!

So now that the York extension is done, let’s focus on what matters. In what areas (roster-wise) have we improved enough to jump ahead of the 8 (EIGHT!) teams ahead of us to sneak into the final playoff spot?

If I’m being honest, unless they’re adding Luchanko and Martone to the roster in the coming year, we’re not getting close to that final playoff spot.

We need more talent, and aside from the addition of Zegras, none of the other signings we made recently is going to move the needle. We need Luchanko and Martone to start living up to their expectations now, or we can just accept that we’re doomed to the Eastern Conference basement again.

There is no logical reason to continue to clog the roster with mediocre signings. Get the kids on the ice with the big team now and let them start to develop there. Yes, they’ll have some tough times and the season will wear them down (like it did at times with Michkov last year).

But the sooner they make the move to the big team, the sooner they can overcome those challenges.

If doomed again to the Eastern Conf basement…..lottery may more beneficial this time around….other than every one’s fav, Gavin McKenna, there is big OHL center Ryan Roobroeck

“In what areas (roster-wise) have we improved enough to jump ahead of the 8 (EIGHT!) teams ahead of us to sneak into the final playoff spot?”
One word answer: Goaltending.
Expounding a bit: Vladar ain’t great, but it’s virtually impossible for the Flyers to have goaltending as bad as last season again. Not playing Kolo, managing Ers’s workload, and adding in Vladar could get the Flyers to roughly average NHL goaltending rather than the absolute worst in the NHL by virtually all metrics. That, alone, would put the Flyers in playoff contention. According to MoneyPuck’s Wins Above Replacement, Flyers goalies last year cost the Flyers 7+ wins compared not to average NHL goaltending but to a competent replacement level NHL goalie (which Vladar is). Just getting replacement level goaltending would result in 14-15 more points which moves the Flyers from 76 to 90-91 points…with 91 representing the last playoff spots in the east.

Well, give York a year or two, then if the Flyers want to trade him or whatever go 4 it. Briere has shown that he can trade a player away with a decent sized contract, like Farabee, for instance. York is more like a 40 pt player or hopefully higher. Some, was probably the Torts effect…

It’s like the Biden administration.
Rewarding mediocrity.
