Happy Saturday, and welcome to the 8/9 edition of the Philly Hockey Now Daily.

I’ll be honest, I am at the point in summer now where I truly miss hockey. It cannot come back soon enough. We’re just over a month away from the Rookie Series between the Flyers and Rangers in Allentown (Sept. 11, 12), which puts us just about six weeks away from the beginning of preseason (Sept. 21), and two months out from the Flyers’ first game.

Is it too early to start the countdown?

In today’s edition of the PhHN Daily, we touch on our latest story here at Philly Hockey Now, as well as give updates on two big-name trade rumors and more! Get it all on the Daily!

Philadelphia Flyers

Philly Hockey Now: The Flyers’ defense will play a critical role in whatever success or failures Philly has next season. Is their defense enough for the team to have success, or do they need big improvement before they can truly compete?

National Hockey Now, NHL Rumors & News

RG: It may be time to put the brakes on the Mason McTavish to the Flyers rumors. RG media has reported the rumored cost of acquiring the young center, and it may be too steep for Philly.

I like McTavish a lot—that’s a big ask. Unless a winger and draft capital could get the job done, I’d say I am now out on McTavish.

ESPN: Another trade rumor seems to be dying quickly. For a long while, it seemed as if Brady Tkachuk could be on the trade market, wanting out of Ottawa. Well, his dad, Keith, has gone on the record and shut all of that down.

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Across the Keystone State, there is yet another rebuilding hockey club. The Penguins are in the middle of a “stealth” rebuild, but Dan Kingerski lists three things to speed it up.

Vegas Hockey Now: The Golden Knights have not been around for long, but they’ve been in the spotlight since joining the league. They’ve had some flashy players, but Hannah Kirkell lists five under appreciated players since their Inaugural Season.

No one will meet that asking price. And Martin Necas should probably be the first option if he wants out of Colorado and a true 1C position with the top talent on a team.
But that asking price is nothing but a ridiculous starting point for negotiation. It will never happen. Offer up Brink, Bonk, and the Leafs 2027 1st for Martin Necas or Mason McTavish. Good chance that gets a deal done.

Frank

AND that’s a deal well worthwhile for The Flyers. Especially Necas who could be 100point Center and is already a ppg player. You could even take back a defenseman and possibly upgrade the blue line while clearing some CAP for Anaheim or Colorado. Ristolainen could be another trade chip. Briere should be trying to kidnap Necas or McTavish if he has too. Or going after a top5 draft pick next season.

Romus

Necas may be too soft and Canes did not want to pony up a huge LTC because of it……check out Canes history on him.

Romus

IMO, Bonk, Leafs’ 1st and unfortunately Tippett may get McTavish. Tippett has to be included because of the money on his contract, since McTavish will equalize that out…Flyers are cap strapped and cannot take on both Tippett and McTavish contracts.

Frank

Flyers are not Cap strapped. They haven’t even chose to use LTIR yet. They could move both Ryan Ellis and Ristolainen to LTIR if they wanted too. But just Ryan Ellis would do it. I do think Tippet, Bonk, and Leafs 1st get it done for McTavish. Probably have to exchange Bonk with a different forward prospect for Necas. And you’re crazy about Necas being soft. And The Canes are the same team paying Kotkaniemi how much again? Necas went from one stingy team to another in Colorado. AND BOTH teams were only giving him temporary time at Center even though he went a ppg last season playing down The Canes lineup and on the wing of MacKinnon. A guy who could potentially score 100+ points doesn’t need to be a grinder. He needs to be competent defensively and rack up points and feed Michkov and Martone pucks! Necas makes this a Flyers forward group a legitimate playoff threat and takes some of the heat off of Couturier and Zegras matchups. And gives The Flyers more skill, size, and options at Center. Think about it. Necas scored more then any player The Flyers have last season and is just hitting his prime.
