Former Phantoms Coach to Join a Metro Rival

Ian Laperriere

According to multiple reports, former Lehigh Valley Phantoms head coach Ian Laperriere is set to join the New York Islanders as a pro scout.

This was first reported by Anthony Di Marco of the Daily Faceoff.

Laperriere was moved from behind the Phantoms bench to an advisory role within the Flyers organization back in May.

While it was never clear what his new role in the front office would look like, Laperriere was set to report to Keith Jones.

Now, the former Phantoms coach has a defined role within the Islanders.

When Laperriere made the initial decision to move on from the Phantoms, it was clear he was looking for a bigger opportunity to coach in the NHL. Laperriere was not going to make said jump from an advisory role with the Flyers.

Instead, he parts ways with the organization, looking for a new opportunity with the Islanders.

Good news…maybe…JettLu, as a 19-year old may be able to play in the AHL this season if he does not make the main roster.

Not a great loss for Laperriere to go and I’m assuming he had the Flyers blessing since (I think) he was still under contract.

Still, it bothers me when any goes to someone else in the division.

It bothered me when they lost Shaw to a division rival but not Lappy. He seems like a nice guy but I’ve been waiting for him to move on since he was a (bad) assistant with the Flyers. Good luck Lappy, you’ll look great adding blue to the orange!
