PhHN Daily: Flyers Clear Cap Space; Penguins Breakout; Roster Submission
The Flyers made a big-time, cap-clearing trade on Sunday, which provides the organization with something they’re not used to: flexibility.
Elsewhere, rosters have to be submitted by 5:00 p.m. EST on Monday. Most NHL teams, including Philadelphia, have already cut their rosters down to 23 players by now, so many predictions of lineups and rosters have been released, especially for some Metro rivals.
We get all of that, plus a different perspective from the Flyers’ recent deal in the 10/6 edition of the PhHN Daily.

Philadelphia Flyers
Philly Hockey Now: The Flyers made a trade on Sunday! No, it wasn’t for a new player, nor was it for picks. Instead, the Flyers cleared tons of cap space by trading Ryan Ellis to the San Jose Sharks.
For what it’s worth, at the time of the Ellis acquisition, it seemed like a great trade. It just went incredibly wrong extremely fast.
Additionally, in Flyers news, the 23-man roster for opening night is expected to be finalized on Monday. Recent transactions have made it pretty clear that the Flyers will go 14F/7D, keeping both Jett Luchanko and Rodrigo Abols on the roster. We had been talking about the final cut for a while now. The Flyers waived Dennis Gilbert on Saturday, which should finalize the roster.
NHL Rumors and News
Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Penguins camp has come to an end, and their roster is officially set. Dan Kingerski projects the Flyers’ rivals’ lineup and also discusses breakouts and disappointments from their camp.
San Jose Hockey Now: The Ryan Ellis trade felt a bit one-sided, right? Yes, the Sharks are now paying a lot of money to a few players who won’t even play in San Jose. However, Sheng Peng over at SJHN puts the trade into perspective from the Sharks’ point of view.
NHL Rumors: The goalie market got quite the boost. Three goalies, all of whom are expected to have a claim interest, were waived by their respective clubs. Michael DiPietro (Boston), Nico Daws (NJD), and Clay Stevenson were all waived on Sunday. Do they get scooped up?
New Jersey Hockey Now: Speaking of Nico Daws, the Devils took a risk putting him on waivers. Now, they hold their breath and hope he does not get picked up.
Sticking in New Jersey, is there a (La)chance Shane makes their opening night roster (Sorry for the terrible joke). Lachance was one of my favorite players to watch in College Hockey last season. Now, NJHN’s James Nichols has him making the Devils’ opening night roster.
