Flyers Show Fight, Dominate Seattle in 5-2 Win Monday Night

Published

on

It was a near perfect night from the Philadelphia Flyers on Monday. The team improved its record to 3-2-1 after handing the Seattle Kraken their first regulation loss of the season by a score of 5-2.

Once again, the Flyers got excellent goaltending from Dan Vladar. The team got off to a fast start and sustained it for the entire game. Tyson Foerster netted two power play goals, an area in which the Flyers were worst in the league so far. Owen Tippett continued his scorching start with a pair of goals himself.

Defensively, the Flyers had another good night, holding Seattle to just 23 shots on goal. Not to mention, two Flyers dropped the gloves in their win.

Here is how we got to the final score.

1st Period

The Philadelphia Flyers got out to a hot start. Just about a minute in, Cam York made a great play driving to the net, but nobody home for the pass. Jett Luchanko registered a shot early on as well.

Later on, Travis Konecny made great defensive play and turned it into an offensive chance. The puck snuck past Daccord but could not go. Moments later, Matvei Michkov found Owen Tippett from behind the net for a great opportunity, but Tippett could not get a clean shot off.

Despite the Flyers looking sharp, it was Jordan Eberle getting the scoring started, as he scored a goal just 7:23 into the game, assisted by Berkly Catton, who gets his first NHL point in his debut.

It did not take long for the Flyers to answer, and guess who it was.

Owen Tippett (5) netted the equalizer 9:56 into the game. He tipped in the Nick Seeler (2) shot. Sean Couturier (4) set up the play by stealing the puck from Joey Daccord who made a dangerous decision to play the puck. Three straight games with a goal for Tippett.

It did not take long after for the Flyers to take the lead.

After a legitimatley horiffic first 1:55 of the Flyers power play, Tyson Foerster (2) makes up for it, beating Daccord glove side to the top-right. Foerster’s second of the year gave the Flyers teh 2-1 lead with 6:41 left in the first. Bobby Brink (2) picked up the primary assist while Cam York (1) earned his first point of the season with the secondary assist.

It was a short but sweet fight for Nikita Grebenkin, who fired up the Philly crowd. He made quick work of Cale Fleury, taking him right to the ground.

Grebenkin stepped in to defend Garnet Hathaway, who Fluery hit up high. Grebenkin was given a five-minutemajor for fighting, and a 10-minute misconduct for instgating. Life was injected into the Flyers.

2nd Period

Philly kept it coming in the second period, and really poured it on in the second period.

Travis Konecny (1) finally gets one to go after a great cross-crease pass from Egor Zamula (1). Matvei Michkov (1) picked up his first assist of the season on the Konecny tally. Flyers lead 3-1 4:59 into the second period.

Konecny had been snakebitten to start the year. While you could notice him in every game so far this season, he just could not get anything to cross the goal line. That one had to feel good for Konecny.

The Flyers kept rolling as the second period went on.

Shortly after the Konecny goal, John Hayden got called for a roughing penalty, which led to a Flyers power play. Foerster (3) deflects the York (2) shot from the point, making it a 4-1 Flyers lead. Trevor Zegras (5) also picked up an assist.

It was initially ruled a goal for Noah Cates, but the score was later changed to Foerster.

Jani Nyman (3) scored a power-play goal from the right-side circle for Seattle, cashing in early after a Jamie Drysdale hook. While it seemed like it could have been a wet blanket on the fire the Flyers had started, Tippett continued his scorching hot streat to start the season.

Tippett (5) scored his of the night after some great passing from Couturier (5). York (3) had the secondary assist, his third of the night.

The new Flyers’ top line was buzzing on Monday night. Philadelphia’s lead was extended to 5-2.

Period 3

Seattle made the switch to Philipp Grubauer in goal for the third period after Joey Daccord allowed five goals on 21 shots.

Grubauer settled in nicely, and held the Flyers scoreless in the final 20 minutes. Both teams turned in their lowest shot totals of the game, with each tallying six shots on net.

That does not mean the period was uneventful.

In a weird sequence, Tippett laid a big hit on Tye Kartye, followed by Ryan Lindgren instaging things with Konecny. Like Grebenkin’s scrap earlier, Konecny made quick work of Lindgren, the proceeded to talk all the way to the box, not stopping once he was inside.

Lindgren got the 10-minute misconduct for instigation. Because of the time left in the game, his night was over.

The game would end with a 5-2 final score; The Kraken’s first regulation loss of the season.

Flyer of the Game

In a near perfect night, there were multiple players who could have been the Flyer of the game. Owen Tippett with his two goals was named the first start, but to me, Cam York was a big difference maker.

The opposition’s shot totals been low since York’s return to the lineup. Defensivley, he has played well. It was his offensive game that stood out on Monday. The Flyers’ power play entered the game in the basement. After their two-goal night, the Flyers jumed 10 spots to 22nd.

York has been eager to rejoin the man-advantage unit, and proved why he deserves to be on it. His two assists on the power play were huge, especially on the second score. York played a great offensive game from a defenseman.

What’s Next for the Flyers
