PhHN Daily: Flyers Injury Update; Frozen Frenzy; Crosby Milestone
The Philadelphia Flyers face off against their cross-state rival on Tuesday, kicking off the Frozen Frenzy on national television. Pittsburgh is on a tear to start the season, so it certainly will be a fun matchup.
The Frozen Frenzy is such a fun concept —every NHL team plays on one day —but I do think it is far from perfect. Games should be spread out more, maybe with a stronger rivalry focus (beyond just PHI vs PIT). There is so much potential here.
Anyway, back to the daily. The Flyers made a flurry of news on Monday, sending a prospect back to juniors and providing injury updates. Now, where do the Flyers go from here?

Philadelphia Flyers
Philly Hockey Now: The Philadelphia Flyers have been without two blueliners to start the season. One was expected, while the other stems from a camp injury. We have not heard much on either blueliner since the season began, until GM Danny Briere provided an update on both Rasmus Ristolainen and Oliver Bonk on Monday afternoon.
Speaking of Briere, he and the Flyers’ front office and coaching staff made the decision to send Jett Luchanko back to juniors on Monday. Luchanko had looked promising in his short time in Philadelphia, but could not produce, keeping him low in the lineup. That gave the team no choice but to send him back.
That leaves an open spot on the Flyers’ 23-man roster. Do the Flyers go with a vet who they don’t mind keeping in the press box? Or, do the Flyers go with a young kid, giving someone else a chance to crack the lineup? Who should be the Flyers’ next call up?
The NHL Frozen Frenzy is on Tuesday. All 32 teams are in action, starting at 6:00 p.m. EST, with the Flyers facing the Penguins and the Maple Leafs hosting the Flames. The LA Kings and San Jose Sharks round out the frenzy with their 11:00 p.m. EST puck drop.
It’s going to be a fun day of hockey.
NHL Rumors & News
Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Welcome to the 1700 club, Sidney Crosby. Crosby became the ninth player in NHL history to reach 1700 points, and is the fourth fastest player to do so. He is now just 22 points behind Mario Lemieux for eighth in scoring all-time.
New Jersey Hockey Now: It’s never too early to start talking trade chatter. The New Jersey Devils are expected to be right in the thick of the playoff hunt, making them buyers once again. James Nichols over at New Jersey Hockey Now lists four way-too-early trade targets for the Devils.
NHLTradeRumors.me: Adrian Kempe is a pending UFA. He is very clearly the Los Angeles Kings’ best player. However, he has yet to ink an extension. Kempe has made his desire to stay in LA very clear, but the Kings have not been able to get it done. Elliotte Friedman has the latest on negotiations between the Kings and their star.
Sportsnet: The Calgary Flames are not playing well. They have two of the most coveted trade chips in the league now with Nazem Kadri and Rasmus Andersson. Could they be on the move sooner rather than later this season?

Wonder what Rasmus gets traded first…Calgary’s or Philly’s?
