The Philadelphia Flyers have officially placed goaltender Sam Ersson on injured reserve with a lower-body injury. Per Flyers GM Danny Briere, Ersson will be out for at least one week.

Ersson was absent from the team’s practice on Wednesday, with head coach Rick Tocchet saying the Flyers’ goaltender was dealing with a little tweak. On Thursday, Tocchet reiterated that it was a tweak, something stemming from warm-ups on Wednesday rather than the game on Tuesday.

The Flyers gave an official update on Thursday, citing a lower-body injury as the cause for his time on the IR.

Ersson’s injury history is not a short list. He had multiple stints just last season, where a lower-body injury kept him out of games. Now, the Flyers’ goaltender is on another stint on the injured reserve.

While his numbers have been dragged down by the Winnipeg Jets game, where he allowed four goals on 14 shots, Ersson has played well this season. He is 2-1-1, with a 3.08 GAA and a .876 SV%.

In Ersson’s absence, the Flyers have recalled Aleksei Kolosov.

Flyers Recall Aleksei Kolosov

Aleksei Kolosov played 17 games in the NHL last season, during which he undoubtedly faced his struggles. He was 5-9-1 with a .867 SV% and 3.59 GAA. Kolosov was sent to the AHL, where he had 12 starts, an improved save percentage of .884%, and a 3.11 GAA.

This year, the road has been much smoother for Kolosov. In five games for the Phantoms, Kolosov has a 2.60 GAA, a .918 SV%, one shutout, and a 3-2-0 record.

With Ersson expected to be out at least a week, and Thursday’s game marking the beginning of three games in four days, Kolosov should get at least one start during Ersson’s absence. Can he keep the positive momentum he had built in the AHL rolling in the NHL?
